Women’s Tennis Caps Off Regular Season With 6-1 at Loyola

Navy finishes the regular season with a record of 22-8 overall

BALTIMORE, Md – The Navy women's tennis team (22-8, 5-1 Patriot League) rounded out its 2018-19 regular season with a 6-1 road victory on Tuesday afternoon against Loyola (13-6, 3-4 Patriot League) at the McClure Tennis Center.

"Today was a good showing by the ladies," head coach Keith Puryear said after the match. "As all conference matches are at this time of the year, Loyola was prepped and ready, as were we. Loyola is a well-coached team and we knew we had to be prepared to hit lots of balls because Loyola makes you play. Catalina [Rico] and Miranda [Deng] came out quickly to get us our first doubles win, followed by Amanda [Cyr] and Kaylah [Hodge]. In singles, we loved the performances from Aimee [Dervishian], Katreina [Corpuz], Meghana [Komarraju] and Kacey [Moore]. Ansofi [Wreder] also toughed one out at No. 1 singles.

"We must remain focused on our goals as we move forward in preparation for the Patriot League Championship in a few weeks."

The Midshipmen got a strong start at No. 3 doubles with Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) and Catalina Rico (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) grabbing a 6-1 victory over Sandra Aguirre and Abby Decker. Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) clinched the doubles point at the top-seeded doubles match in a 6-3 win against Kateri Martin and Abigail Thornton.

In the final doubles match, Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) dropped a narrow 7-6 (7-3) contest to Alexandria Agee and Lin Robertson at No. 2 doubles.

With a 1-0 lead at the start of singles, Navy got three-straight wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles to secure the win. Corpuz won in straight-sets against Robertson at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Then at No. 5 singles, Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) won her 26th match of the season in a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Aguirre. Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) secured the team victory for the Midshipmen following her 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.

With the match in hand, Komarraju pushed Navy's lead to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Decker. Loyola's lone point of the match came at No. 2 singles after Thornton edged out Hodge, 7-5, 6-3. The final match on the court was at No. 1 singles where Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.) won a third-set tiebreaker over Martin, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0 (10-2), to seal Navy's 6-1 victory on the road to conclude the regular season.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Friday, April 26 during the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament, which is hosted by Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. The semifinals of the tournament are set for Saturday, April 28, with the championship match on Sunday, April 28.
