Track and Field Concludes George Mason Spring Invitational

The Mids posted 16 IC4A / ECAC qualifying marks on the day.

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Navy track and field team competed at the 2019 George Mason Spring Invitational on Saturday at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. The Mids posted 16 IC4A / ECAC qualifying marks on the day.

"It was a productive day at George Mason," Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook said. "We had a lot of PRs all across the board. We will now get back to training and continue to prepare for the next part of our season."
 
The men's team posted 14 IC4A qualifying marks on the day. In the 100m dash, Justin Titgen (Waxhaw, N.C.) clocked a 10.93, while Richard Hansen (Houston, Texas) notched a 10.93. The Mids posted three IC4A times in the 200m dash with Hansen clocking a 21.82, Titgen registering a 22.01, and Jonathan Nainggolan (Etiwanda, Calif.) crossing the finish line in 22.08. Sean Casey (Vienna, Va.) posted an IC4A time of 1:53.86 in the 800m run. The trio of Michael Karls (Festus, Mo.), David Nelsen (Chandler, Ariz.), and Julian Perez (Beaumont, Texas) clocked IC4A times of 3:52.24, 3:53.43, and 3:54.34, respectively.
 
Hunter Wargo (West Branch, Iowa) posted a qualifying time of 14.58 in the 110m hurdles. The 4x100m relay team of Nainggolan, Titgen, Treveon Walker (Texarkana, Texas), and Hansen combined for an IC4A time of 41.79.
 
In the throws, John Barber (Sugar Land, Texas) posted a distance of 47.96m (157-04) in the discus, while Tommy Reeder (Kiln, Miss.) notched a throw of 54.12m (177-07) in the hammer. Cade Wessel (Bozeman, Mont.) registered a distance of 58.90m (193-03) in the javelin.
 
Women's basketball player Sophie Gatzounas (South Hadley, Mass.) scored an ECAC qualifying mark in the javelin in her first meet of the season. The sophomore posted a throw of 47.36m (155-04) to finish second in the event. She was joined by Andrea Juzyca (Milton, Mass.) registered an ECAC distance of 42.76m (140-03) in the javelin to finish seventh.
 
Aside from the qualifying times / marks, the Midshipmen posted solid performances throughout the day.
 
Annika Pearson (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) won the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:21.30. Piper Freed (Middletown, Del.) and Emily Craig (Reistertown, Md.) finished eighth and ninth in the 5,000m run with times of 18:18.42 and 18:19.95, respectively.
 
Aislyn Hayman (Leon, W.Va.) finished fourth in the shot put with a distance in 13.31m (43-08.00), while Izzy Marini (Elkgrove, Calif.) came in 10th with a throw of 11.88m (38-11.75). In the discus, Jahna Alleyne (York, Pa.) came in fourth with a throw of 42.37m (139-00), while Hayman was seventh with a mark of 39.34m (129-01). Zoe Broadway (Joshua, Texas) finished 10th in the discus registering a 37.71m (123-09). Alleyne and Marini finished third and eighth in the hammer throw with distances of 49.42m (162-02) and 46.04m (151-00).
 
Nick Rischar (Davie, Fla.) and Mason Reeves (Ripon, Calif.) finished in the top 10 in the 5,000m run. Rischar came in fifth with a time of 15:03.36, while Reeves clocked a 15:13.02 to come in eighth. The 400m hurdles saw Christian Moreno (Oronogo, Mo.) finish in ninth place with a time of 56.78. John Bowers (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) took fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:45.23, while Elliott Schultz (Charlotte, N.C.) took 10th with a time of 10:10.12.
 
Elijah Lake came in 10th in the high jump with a height of 1.84m (6-00.50), while Charles Dever (Thornton, Pa.) and Christopher St. Helen (Richmond, Va.) notched heights of 4.82m (15-09.75) and 4.67m (15-03.75) in the pole vault to finish third and fourth.
 
Barber finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 14.95m (49-00.75), while Jimmer Swanson (Grand Island, Neb.) registered a mark of 43.79m (143-08) in the discus to place 10th. The hammer saw Jonathan Harding (Lafayette, La.) and Eric Donevant (Peachtree City, Ga.) come in eighth and ninth, respectively, in the hammer throw. Harding notched a throw of 49.89m (163-08), while Donevant scored a throw of 49.29m (161-08).
 
Navy returns to action on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, as the Midshipmen travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2019 Virginia Challenge.
