ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Nine members of the Navy men's tennis team won a pair of matches on the day as the Mids (25-13, 4-0 Patriot League) recorded victories over league foes Bucknell (7-11, 1-2) and Holy Cross (4-13, 0-7) on Saturday. Navy defeated Bucknell, 7-0, in a match played in Lewisburg, Pa., and recorded a 6-1 victory over Holy Cross in a contest played in Worcester, Mass.
Navy won three close matches against Bucknell to earn the doubles point between the teams.
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) defeated Marwan Abaza and Max McDonald, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles in the first match to finish. The Mids garnered the point when their No. 2 team of
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and
Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.) registered a 6-3 victory over Cooper Bradshaw and Ethan Jacobs at the No. 3 flight.
The remaining match saw Jake Fishken (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) and
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) win a 7-5 decision over Alex Pedrazzini and Andrei Vitiuc at No. 2 doubles.
Navy's lead grew to 2-0 when
Jack McBride (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) defeated Vitiuc, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. It was soon 3-0 in favor of the Mids after Kjellberg won a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Bradshaw at No. 6 singles. Clinching the match for Navy was Fishkin when he staved off Ryan Jurist, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), at No. 5 singles.
Also winning matches were, in finish order, Ton at No. 1, Durham at No. 3 and Thompson at No. 2. Each of those three matches were extended into three sets.
"The doubles matches were close ones with good tennis played by both teams at each of the three flights," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "We were fortunate to win some of the key points in the matches.
"In singles, Jack, Jan and Jake had good straight set wins to get us to four points. Then Andrew, Derrick and Greg were able to scrap together three wins in matches that went to three sets."
Close doubles matches also were played in Worcester as the Mids claimed the point against the Crusaders. First,
Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) and
Sam Vagner (Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied a 6-1 win over Henry Harrs and Michael Varda at the No. 3 flight.
Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.) soon followed with a 6-3 victory over Peter Campito and Matthew Slowinski at the No. 1 flight to give the point to Navy.
The Holy Cross tandem of Matthew Murphy and Alex Ruenhorst would defeat
Andrew Hicks (Sr., Haddon Heights, N.J.) and
Cameron Kirkpatrick (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif.), 6-4, at No. 2 doubles in the last match to finish.
Kahatapitiya lost just one game in defeating Varda at No. 2 singles, and Lohrbach matched that effort in his win over Murphy at the No. 1 flight to quickly make the score 3-0. Navy earned the overall decision when O'Brien registered a 6-1, 6-2 win over Slowinski at No. 3 singles.
Navy's additional two points came courtesy of victories by Kirkpatrick at No. 4 and Vagner at No. 5.
"It was a good win for us in some tough weather conditions," said Navy associate head coach
John Moreland. "We did a good job in taking control early in the top half of the singles lineup, and were able to come away with two wins in the three challenging matches played in the bottom half."
Navy will play another split doubleheader on Wednesday as the Mids will play host to Coppin State and play at Loyola.
