ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (20-7, 3-1 Patriot League) suffered its first Patriot League match of the season on Saturday afternoon against Boston University (10-8, 4-0 Patriot League) on Senior Day, 4-3, at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium.
Navy looked to rally from an early deficit after dropping the double point for the second-straight match. However, the Midshipmen were unable to replicate the rally from last weekend and dropped a tight 4-3 contest.
"I am really proud of our team's effort today," head coach
Keith Puryear said on Saturday. "We continue to develop and gain with each match we play, which showed today. In each match, it really came to how well we took care of the small details during the critical stages of the match. Three doubles got us on the board, but BU got a jump on us at both one and two doubles. We fought back on both courts but the lead was too big to completely overcome.
"All the singles matches were wars, fought tooth and nail. We were able to get three, but the fourth remained out of reach. Now we need to use this to spur us on as we prepare for Bucknell tomorrow."
The Terriers jumped ahead early in doubles after Emily Kim and Shelly Yaloz upended
Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) and
Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) at No. 2 doubles, 6-2. The freshmen pair of
Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and
Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) evened the race for the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-3 win against Sabrina Faybyshev and Katya Martens.
Boston edged the Midshipmen for the doubles point at No. 1 doubles as Lily Burchell and Remi Ramos won a 6-4 decision over
Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and Navy's lone senior
Catalina Rico (San Jose, Calif.).
After taking part in Navy's lone doubles match, Komarraju tied the match at one with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Faybyshev. The back-and-forth contest continued with the Terriers grabbing a 2-1 lead after Yaloz won a 6-3, 6-3 decision against
Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.).
Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) won her 24th singles match of the season at No. 6 following a 6-2, 6-3 win against Martens.
With the match tied, 2-2, Boston regained the lead at No. 3 singles following Kim's three-set win against Klopfer. Klopfer won the first set, 6-2, but lost the final two sets and the match, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.) tied the match for the third time as the Midshipmen and Terriers continued to trade team points. Wreder beat Ramos at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5, to square the match at three with just one match left on the court.
In the final match on the court at No. 4 singles, Corpuz edged out Burchell, 7-5, in the first set but Burchell rebounded to win the second and third sets, 6-1, 6-4, and win the match for Boston, 4-3.
Prior to the match, Navy honored its senior captain
Catalina Rico on Senior Day as the Midshipmen round out their weekend home schedule in 2019.
Navy is back on the road on Sunday as it travels to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell at 11 a.m.
