LEWISBURG, Pa. – After dropping its first Patriot League match on Saturday, the Navy women's tennis team (21-7, 4-1 Patriot League) got back in the win column on Sunday with a 6-1 victory on the road against Bucknell (11-5, 2-1 Patriot League).
The Midshipmen won the doubles point against the Bison after being forced to come from behind in the last two duals after dropping the doubles point.
"Today it was very important for us to recover from yesterday's match with Boston University," head coach
Keith Puryear said after the win. "Bucknell has had a great season, so we knew we needed to be ready. Our doubles got us off to a great start. Catalina [Rico] and Amanda [Cyr] played a very clean match to get us the first doubles point, followed by Kaylah [Hodge] and Miranda [Deng]. Aimee [Dervishian] and Annalise [Klopfer] then won theirs in a tiebreaker after being down, 5-1, in the tiebreaker. In singles, we had good performances to get the win. We will have a well-earned day of rest then start prepping for Friday's match against Georgetown."
Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and
Catalina Rico (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) got Navy off to a fast start with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Cayla Koch and Paige Leavy. The duo of
Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) and
Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) secured the doubles point for the Midshipmen with a 6-3 victory over Jill Auteri and Mishi Papich at No. 3 doubles.
With the doubles point in hand,
Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) and
Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) clinched the sweep at No. 2 doubles against Sofia Ayuso and Daniela Bellini. Dervishian and Klopfer rallied to win the tiebreaker in a 6-5 (13-11) contest. The win from Dervishian and Klopfer also moved Klopfer's doubles win total to 22, which is two wins away from tying the record for most doubles wins in a season.
Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) doubled the Navy lead to 2-0 after winning a straight-set match at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0, against Papich. Bucknell's lone point of the day came at the top-seeded singles match where Bellini won a 6-1, 6-0 match against
Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.).
Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) continued her strong freshman campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Ayuso. Moore now has 25 singles victories this year, which ranks third for most singles wins in a season and is four wins away from tying
Amanda Keller's 29 wins from 2014-15.
With a 3-1 lead in the dual, Deng clinched the win for the Midshipmen at No. 6 singles after sweeping Auteri, 6-1, 6-4. In the final two matches on the court, Klopfer earned her second win of the day in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, against Leavy. At No. 2 singles, Hodge and Koch each won a set, but Hodge won the tiebreaking third set to win the match, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8), and seal Navy's 6-1 win on the road over the Bison.
