Track and Field Leads After Day 1 of Patriot League Outdoor Championships

Six individuals and a relay team earned All-Patriot League on day 1.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Navy track and field team opened up competition in the 2019 Patriot League Outdoor Championships with a solid performance, taking the day-one lead in both the men's and women's competition. The men's team are in first place with 83 points, while the women's team is in front with 70.50 points in first day of competition at the conference meet, hosted by Holy Cross.
 
"It was a good day," Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook said after the meet. "We qualified a lot of people to the finals with some good performances. The team was able to score some valuable points. Every point matters. We had some really good kids that really stepped up today. There are a lot of finals tomorrow, but we qualified a lot of people. The moral is high. Everyone wants to see their teammates do well. We just have to keep the momentum and keep everyone hungry for tomorrow."
 
The men's team are in first place with (38) ahead of Army West Point (68 points), Bucknell (31), and Boston University (27). Lehigh (9), Holy Cross (7), Lafayette (6), and Colgate (2) round out the men's scoring on day one.
 
On the women's side, Navy's 70.50 points leads the way, ahead of Bucknell (41), Lehigh (29.50), and Army West Point (26), while Holy Cross (23), Boston University (23), American (10), Loyola (8), and Lafayette (3) close out the scoring.
 
Despite not many finals on day one, six individual Midshipmen and a relay team earned All-Patriot League distinction.
 
Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.), Stefano Pineda (Hockessin, Del.), and the 4x800m relay team of Nicholas Williams (Bristol, R.I.), Sean Casey (Vienna, Va.), Ashwin Briggs (Pickerington, Ohio), and Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.) all earned First Team All-Patriot League. Hayden Fox (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Benjamin Stewart (Charlestown, R.I.) claimed second team honors. On the women's side, Ariana McKenzie (Potomac, Md.) and Sophie Gatzounas (South Hadley, Mass.) were each Second Team All-Conference.
 
Navy had 17 qualify for the finals on Saturday, including 11 on the men's side and six on the women's side.
 
Navy concludes competition in the 2019 Patriot League Outdoor Championships on Saturday, May, 4, at Hart Track in Worcester, Mass. on the campus of Holy Cross. Live results will be available throughout the day, while the Patriot League Network will live stream the meet starting at noon.
