WORCESTER, Mass. – The Navy track and field team won the men's and women's Patriot League Outdoor Championship titles for the second consecutive season. For the men, it was the sixth consecutive and seventh overall outdoor championship, while the women posted back-to-back wins and their fourth overall outdoor title. It is the second time that both the men's and women's teams won in the same season.
"It was a great day," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "The student-athletes were ready to compete and the coaching staff was ready to get after it. The men are excited for the women to do well and the women are excited for the men to do well. It was a total team effort. I am really proud of the group."
"I think this team has grown a lot with our leadership with
Amanda Henson, Sean Brennan, and Demetrius Lanier. A lot of it falls on them and the event group leaders and the culture we are trying to create. I couldn't do it without my staff. We set out a meeting in July and laid it out. Luckily, we were able to accomplish it, but it wasn't without a lot of hard work and struggle. It is a process and we were able to come out on top today. We received some huge performances because Army was there every step of the way with us. It is definitely rewarding to know that you've had a lot of struggles along the way and came out on top. The team is really excited and I am happy for them."
Cook was named the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year, while John Finnegan was tabbed the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet. Sean Brennan was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet, while also earning Men's Highest Point Scorer.
The men's team posted the most points, 289, since the league expanded to nine teams to finish first ahead of Army West Point, who tallied 255 points. Bucknell (94) came in third, followed by Boston University (80), Lafayette (45), Holy Cross (41), Lehigh (36), Colgate (10), and American (6). The women's side saw Navy register 181.50 points to defeat Army West Point (155), Boston University (137), and Bucknell (126.50). Lehigh (96.50), Holy Cross (76.50), Loyola (48), Lafayette (20), American (16), and Colgate (1) rounded out the scoring.
The men's team won 15 of the 22 events over the weekend, while the women's team notched a pair of victories with seven second place finishes. Sean Brennan won the shot put, discus, and hammer throw to sweep his events, while Finnegan won the 400m dash, 800m run and was a member of the winning 4x400m relay team. Despite never competing in the event until this season,
Amanda Agana won the 400m hurdles, while
Cat Goss posted her first ever Patriot League victory claiming the heptathlon.
