HAMPTON, Va. – Playing its third game in four days, the Navy women's soccer team notched its third straight win when it defeated the Hampton Lady Pirates by a score of 2-0. Bolstered by goals from
Baseley McClaskey (Sr., Grand Junction, Colo.) and
Jeana Freeman (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.), the Mids improved to 4-1 on the year, while the Lady Pirates dropped to 1-3 in the contest hosted at the HU Soccer Complex.
"It was great to come away with another road victory today," remarked head coach
Carin Gabarra. "It was a very territorial game where the action was focused in the attacking thirds and our defense stood strong once again. The sign of a good team is to deal with adversity and come away with a win. We're pleased to have so many players see the field this road trip. Their experience will help us moving forward."
McClaskey challenged Hampton's goalkeeper Maya Andrew early and often with a pair of free kicks from just outside the 18-yard box. After her first free kick went on goal, her second less than a minute later resulted in a scrum in front of the net and a shot by
Kristina Dzhandzhapanyan (Jr., Diamond Bar, Calif.) that unfortunately caught the bottom of the cross bar.
With 6:38 showing on the call, that dangerous formula of McClaskey whipping in free kicks finally proved prosperous as put a ball into the box that ricoheted through the hands of Andrew and across the goal line.
Navy's next best chance to increase its lead to 2-0 came when a
Molly Swiger (Jr., Johns Creek, Ga.) punt three-hopped over the Hampton defense onto the foot a streaking
Jeana Freeman (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.), who went to net, but was pressured into an errant shot late by a defender from the side.
The Lady Pirates looked to knot the game in the 23rd minute when the hosts worked the sideline and hit a dangerous curling cross inside the six-yard box, but Swiger leapt up and deflected the ball away from the on-coming striker.
Navy continued holding a 1-0 lead into the later parts of the first half though it was not without a scare as Hampton put a free kick from 25 yards out just over the cross bar.
With under 30 seconds remaining in the first half,
Caitlin Doran (Fr., Queens, N.Y.) found herself in a one-on-one with the Hampton goalkeeper, who charged off her line and took out both the ball and Doran in a collision.
For the opening 45 minutes of play, both teams were credited with four shots, one each on goal.
Coming out of half, McClaskey continued leaving her mark in the attacking third as she lined up a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and was blocked by a mass of Hampton defenders in 52nd minute.
The action flowed from end-to-end over the course of the majority second half before Freeman got her name in the scoring column with a goal at 64:34.
The Mids' defense held the Lady Pirates to just one total shot over the final 25-plus minutes to finish off their 2-0 victory.
In her first career shutout, Swiger turned aside the only shot on goal that she saw on Monday. Prior to the day's matchup, she had appeared in three games for a total of 75:10 minutes.
For the game, Navy outshot Hampton 11-5 with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Navy will continue non-conference play at home on Friday with a tilt at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility versus East Tennessee State. Kickoff between the Mids and Buccaneers is set for 8:00 p.m.
