CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – The Navy sprint football team earned its first Collegiate Sprint Football League South Division game, posting a 28-12 victory over Chestnut Hill at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium (Conshohocken Field "A") in Conshohocken, Pa. The Midshipmen improved to 3-0 overall, while the Griffins fell to 2-1 on the season.
"Chestnut Hill played a hard-fought game tonight,"
Major Jason Dewald, USMC stated after the game. "I am proud of our team for sticking together and playing tough. The offense had big plays and are just getting started, while the defense played a lot, but held true."
Offensively, Navy was led by quarterback
Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.). The junior finished the game 6-of-17 for 124 yards and two touchdown passes. Chmiel also tallied 110 yards on the ground on 15 attempts with a score.
Eric Spicer (St. Marys, Ohio) pulled in a pair of receptions for 73 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown catch to lead the Mids.
Walt Fagan (Rock Hill, S.C.) made one reception, but made it count, pulling down an eight-yard TD catch.
Defensively, the Midshipmen were led by
David Postma (Bellevue, Wash.) who finished with 12 total tackles. He was joined by
Adam Weissenfels (Richland, Wash.) and
Nav Seguy (Waltham, Mass.) who registered seven stops apiece.
Senior kicker
Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) was perfect in PATs on the night, going 4-for-4 for four points in the game.
In the first quarter, Navy broke the scoreless tie. Chmiel hit Spicer in stride for 67 yards and the first touchdown of the night. Swenson converted the point after try to put the Midshipmen in front, 7-0. Chmiel called his own number in the second quarter, plunging into the end zone from two yards out. Chestnut Hill tried to cut the deficit in half as quarterback Michael Marino connected with Domoree Hill for an 11-yard TD score. Navy was able to block the extra point attempt to keep the score, 14-6. The Midshipmen found the end zone just before halftime as
Jake Foss (Merced, Calif.) dove into the end zone for six. Swenson converted the kick and Navy entered halftime in front, 21-6.
Chestnut Hill cut into the Navy lead with a touchdown in the third quarter. The Griffins' Sef Penson rushed for two yards and the score. The home team went for a two-point conversion, but were unsuccessful, leaving the Mids with a nine-point advantage. The score remained 21-12 until the fourth quarter. Chmiel completed a pass to Fagan for eight yards and the score. Swenson tacked on the extra point to provide the final margin of victory, 28-12.
Navy continues CSFL-South play next weekend as the Midshipmen travel to West Caldwell, N.J. to face Caldwell. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.
