ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman heavyweight wrestler
John Birchmeier (Ashburn, Va.) has been named the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman after his victory clinched the team win over league foe Bucknell last Friday night.
With Navy trailing Bucknell, 18-15, heading into the night's final match, Birchmeier stepped to the mat not only needing a win, but needing bonus points to ensure the team victory for the Mids. Birchmeier trailed his foe, junior Eric Chakonis, 7-5 after the first period, however he rallied in the second to pair an escape with a takedown for the go-ahead points (8-7). He used the momentum to score two four-point near falls in the final period to earn a 17-7 major decision and clinch the 19-18 victory for the Midshipmen in their EIWA opener. It was the second time this season (Maryland) a match has come down to Birchmeier for the overall team victory. The rookie is now 11-6 on the year, including 4-3 in dual action.
Birchmeier will lead Navy (4-3) back into action on Saturday afternoon when the Midshipmen face 12th-ranked Lehigh (6-3) in Bethlehem, Pa. at 2:00 pm. A series that dates back to 1910, Saturday's dual will mark the 100th meeting between the two long-time rivals. Lehigh holds a 52-47 series advantage.
