First Army-Navy Women's Basketball Matchup of the Season Lies Ahead

Nationally televised game tips at 11 AM on CBS Sports Network

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The most storied and heated rivalry in service academy women's basketball lies ahead on Saturday as the Navy Midshipmen (6-12, 1-6 PL) host the Army West Point Black Knights (5-13, 1-6 PL) in a nationally televised showdown on CBS Sports Network. In a series that dates back to 1981, these two programs are separated by just one game as the Mids hold a slim, 37-36 advantage, though the Black Knights shaved two wins off of their deficit last year with a two-game sweep of the Mids. Navy will be looking to carry over the energy from its exciting come-from-behind victory over Boston University on Wednesday night when facing off with Army on Saturday morning. Tip-off between the two clubs is set for 11:00 a.m. at Alumni Hall. Live stats will be available on NavySports.com.

Last Time Out
Navy found itself in a 40-minute battle with the Boston University Terriers on Wednesday night with the Mids fighting back late to earn the 46-41 victory. In a low-scoring affair where every basket mattered, the Mids (6-12, 1-6 PL) were sparked in the fourth quarter by freshman Lindsay Llewellyn netting 11 of her 14 overall points, including three three-pointers in the final 2:43 of play. Llewellyn hit the game-winning three with 3.9 seconds left in regulation to break a 41-41 tie between the Mids and Terriers (8-10, 3-4 PL) at Alumni Hall.

Llewellyn's complete line for Wednesday was 14 points on 5-10 shooting and a 4-8 mark from three-point range, while corralling seven rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Her backcourt mate Morgan Taylor aided the Mids' effort with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. The duo combined to hit six of Navy's 10 made three-pointers for the contest.

Defense dominated the early action as Navy forced six Boston turnovers in their first 12 possessions, while the Mids opened 0-9 from the field over the first 5:30 of play. This caused both teams to struggle breaking through on the scoreboard as the Terriers led just 4-0 until Mary Kate Ulasewicz broke the shutout with a three-pointer from the top of the arc at 3:07. Trailing 4-3, Navy took its first lead of the game late as Ulasewicz drove the baseline and found a wide-open Taylor on the wing for a three-pointer. That basket was the last field goal for either side as the quarter expired with the score, Navy 6 and Boston University 4. While shooting just 15.4 percent (2-13), the Mids' effort was bolstered by nine Terrier turnovers; four off of steals.

The score stayed at that 6-4 mark for nearly two minutes into the second quarter until Katie Nelson knotted the game for BU with a jumper at 8:17. On Navy's ensuing possession, the Mids found success from distance once again as Taylor was on the receiving end of a Llewellyn pass at the top of the arc. The back-and-forth play continued as the Terriers shaved two points off their deficit on a steal and fast break layup at 6:20. With the score 9-8 in favor of the Mids, Navy scored the next 10 points during a 2:25 span of play by shooting four of six from the field with successful treys from Ulasewicz and Mimi Schrader followed by back-to-back jumpers by Laurel Jaunich. Leading by 11 points, 19-8, Navy saw Boston fight its way into the game with a 6-2 close to the first half to make it 21-14 through 20 minutes of play.

Coming out in the second half, Navy immediately re-took an 11-point lead with four points in 18 seconds as Montana Braxton hit a layup at 9:40 before Taylor got a steal and fast break layup. After the teams traded three-pointers, Boston got within seven points on a brief 4-0 run. With the score 28-21 at the 5:15 point of the third quarter, Nyah Garrison increased the Mids' lead back to double-digits with a three-pointer. Navy would be stuck on that 31-point mark for the remainder of the third quarter as the Terriers netted the final 11 points.

Neither team had much offensive success to start the fourth quarter as Boston made the only field goal of the first three-plus minutes to expand its lead from 32-31 to 34-31. Llewellyn ended Navy's 7:59 scoreless streak with a fadeaway jumper at 6:50. Two free throws by Boston were the only points over the next 3:42 as the visitors held a 36-33 lead before Sydney Johnson made it 38-33 at 3:08. Within 56 seconds the game was tied as the Mids found their offensive mojo with a Llewellyn three-pointer and a steal and fast break layup by Taylor in quick succession. Neither team was able to break that 38-38 tie until Llewellyn sank her third three-pointer of the game (second of the quarter) with 37 seconds left in regulation. After Nelson's initial game-tying three-point attempt rattled out, the Terriers' sharpshooter re-grouped and re-tied the score at 41-41 with a trey at 0:17. Without calling a timeout, the freshmen duo of Schrader and Llewellyn worked their way down the court before Schrader fed Llewellyn on the wing for the go-ahead three-pointer much to the delight of the Mids' bench and fanbase at Alumni Hall on Wednesday. An unabated layup by Sophie Gatzounas gave Navy its final five-point margin of victory, 46-41.

For the game, Navy outshot Boston University, 34.0 percent (18-53) to 33.3 (16-48) from the field and 45.5 percent (10-22) to 20.0 (3-15) from three-point range. The Mids did not attempt a foul shot on Wednesday, while the Terriers were 6-11 from the charity stripe.

Most Recent Matchup ~ Feb. 16 in Annapolis
With annual bragging rights and the Star on the line for the sport of women's basketball, the teams from Army and Navy were up for the challenge in front of a national television audience on Saturday February 16 in Annapolis as both teams battled for 40 minutes. As the scoreboard clicked to all zeroes at the end of regulation, the visiting Black Knights were victorious by a score of 60-48 over the Midshipmen. Up 26-20 at half, Navy was unable to hold off a hard-charging Army squad that netted 40 points in the second half. The Mids were led by a trio of players with double-digit point outputs with Jennifer Coleman atop the scoring column with a team-high 14 points on 6-14 shooting. She added to her stat-line with eight rebounds and a season-best six assists.

The action on Saturday started slowly as the game was knotted at 3-3, 3:45 into the contest. Trailing 7-5, Sierra Swanda found her way into the box score with a Navy layup at 4:00 to even the score at 7-7. The back-and-forth action continued over the final four minutes as Coleman put the Mids up only to see the Black Knights come back on the ensuing possession with a three-pointer. After Swanda put Navy up 11-10 with her fourth point of the quarter, Army netted four unanswered points. The story of the first quarter was the Black Knights' ability to get to the foul line as the visitors were 7-10 from the charity stripe.

Trailing 14-13, Kolbi Green immediately put the Mids back in front as she swished a trey from the right wing 51 seconds in. Navy's freshmen backcourt continued paying dividends as Coleman scored four points on her own to put the Mids up 20-14. A layup by Bianca Roach at 6:31 extended Navy's run out to 11-0 and forced Army to burn a timeout. Baskets by Roach and Laurel Jaunich kept the streak going and helped Navy build a 26-14 lead. Held scoreless for 7:09 to start the period, Madison Hovren broke the drought for Army with a jumper at 2:51. Going back to the first, the Black Knights went 10:04 without a made field goal. This started a 6-0 run by Army to conclude the first half as Navy was scoreless for the final 4:03. For the quarter, Navy outscored Army, 13-6.

Coming out of the locker room up 26-20, Coleman quickly netted four points within a matter of 100 seconds. Army's Kate Murray was equally as proficient with four points of her own to make it 30-24. The Black Knights continued slowly scratching away on their six-point deficit as they scored five of the next six points. With the score 31-29 in favor the Mids, Green extended the host's lead back out to five with three-pointer at 5:04. Back-to-back baskets by Army re-tied the game at 34-34 with 3:42 remaining in the quarter. From that point in time, the Black Knights closed the quarter by outscoring the Mids, 7-4, to build a three-point lead of 41-38 into the quarter break.

On the first possession of the fourth quarter, the Black Knights took their then-largest lead of the game of six as Sarah Bohn made her first shot of the game after opening it 0-7. Up 44-38, Army found success once again from distance as Jess Lewis sank another trey at 8:21. The Black Knights stretched their lead out to 12 with yet another three-pointer at 7:05. Unfazed, Coleman came right down the court and responded with a three-pointer of her own at 6:43. That basket sparked a 7-0 run by the Mids to cut it down to a five-point deficit, 50-45. Unfortunately for the 5,548 fans in attendance at Alumni Hall this would be as close as Navy would shrink its deficit down to over the final 5:20 as the team was held to just one made field goal during this last stretch of action. Army countered this with two field goals and six made free throws to send the game final at 60-48.

For the game, Navy outshot Army, 39.2 (20-51) percent to 34.7 (17-49). A 37.5 (6-16) percent to 22.7 (5-22) percent edge in three-point shooting and a decisive 74.1 (20-27) percent to 50.0 (3-6) advantage in free throws helped turn the final score in the Black Knights' favor.
