ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team posted its first two-match sweep of the spring season on Saturday as the Mids (5-3) posted a 6-1 win over Winthrop (0-4) in Greenville, N.C., and a 5-2 victory over Saint Joseph's (1-1) at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
Navy earned the doubles point from Winthrop by winning the first two matches to finish.
Christian Pumpelly (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) and
Gavin Segraves (Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) recorded a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles and
Finn Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) and
Reilly Wilson (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) posted a 6-4 win at the No. 1 flight.
Segraves accounted for the team's second point of the match as he won, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
Derrick Thompson (So., Towson, Md.) followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles to make the score 3-0. Winthrop won in three sets at the No. 2 flight, but
Conners O'Brien (So., Rensselaer, N.Y.) lost just three games in winning at No. 5 singles to close out the match.
"It was nice for this group to get a win today," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "They had been tested by a tough schedule thus far this season, and those lessons learned from the last few weeks came through today."
Navy also won the doubles point from Saint Joseph's.
Jack Dabek (So., Dublin, Ohio) and
Greg Durham (Sr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) did not lose a game at No. 1 doubles, while Navy's No. 2 of
Jake Fishkin (So., Baltimore, Md.) and
Romesh Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) won by the score of 6-4.
Fishek went on to win, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, Kahatapitiya posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles and Durham recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles.
"This was a quality win for the guys," said Navy associate head coach
John Moreland. "Saint Joseph's is a much improved team from last season. We had to battle out there and were able to keep momentum on our side in big moments."
Navy will play host to Georgetown and Fairleigh Dickinson Sat., Feb. 8.
