Women's Basketball Heads to Boston in Search of Season Sweep

Mids defeated Terriers 46-41 on January 22

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Coming off a valiant performance on the road against the first place Bucknell Bison that saw its undermanned effort fall just short, the Navy women's basketball team will continue its two-game road trip with action in Boston this weekend. Less than a month after their initial meeting during the 2020 season, the Mids (7-16, 2-10 PL) and Terriers (13-10, 8-4 PL) will go head-to-head at Case Gym on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. Navy will be looking for the season sweep of Boston after winning the first matchup by a score of 46-41 in Annapolis on January 22. All of the action will streamed live via the Patriot League Network, as well as throughout New England on NESNplus.

Last Time Out
Faced with the difficult task of taking on a Bucknell Bison team that came into Wednesday's game in first place in the Patriot League and 8-1 at home, the Navy women's basketball team was also saddled with the news that two more of its starters would be sidelined due to illness and injuries. Coming into the contest at Sojka Pavilion with just eight healthy players, the Mids battled for 40 minutes and came within six points late of defeating the Bison. Four free throws by Bucknell in the waning seconds helped the hosts earn the ten-point victory, 75-65. Team captain Mary Kate Ulasewicz willed Navy throughout the game as she played 37 of a possible 40 minutes and scored a career-high 29 points on 9-14 shooting from the field and a 9-9 performance from the foul line. Jasmine Bishop added 11 points and four rebounds in 35 minutes of action.

Falling behind 10-0 over the first three minutes of the contest on Wednesday night, Montana Braxton got Navy onto the scoreboard at 6:33 with a driving layup. The Bison's early success continued as they held a 14-6 lead at the midway point of the opening quarter. Navy slowly crept closer as its defense held Bucknell without a point for the final 5:07 of the stanza. Bishop sparked the Mids' offense with four straight points before Ciera Hertelendy found her way into the box score with a lengthy baseline jumper. With the score 14-12 and Bucknell with the ball, Hertelendy swiped an Ellie Mack dribble and started a fast break with Mimi Schrader that resulted in the freshman point guard hitting a step-back three-pointer to beat the buzzer and give Navy its first lead of the game, 15-14. The Mids shot 50.0 percent (5-10) from the field and forced the Bison into five turnovers.

Coming out trailing by one, the host Bucknell squad re-took the lead on its first possession on a Tessa Brugler layup. Brugler helped the Bison extend their advantage out to three points 60 seconds later, 18-15. Hertelendy drew the Mids back within one on a post-up and hook shot at 7:21. The back-and-forth action continued as the teams traded field goals on three consecutive possessions between 6:18 and 5:32 to make it a 22-20 game in favor of Bucknell. Lindsay Llewellyn's trey during this run was the last for the Mids for the next 3:54 as the Bison slowly edged ahead by eight, 28-20. Ulasewicz ended this cold stretch with an elbow jumper at 1:53. Bucknell scored the final three points of the half to take a 31-22 lead into the locker room. The Bison shot 66.7 percent (8-12) on their way to a 17-7 second period scoring advantage.

Similar to the first half, Bucknell opened the second half off fast with six unanswered points over the first 35 seconds. Once again, Ulasewicz facilitated the end of a Bucknell scoring streak as she converted a pair of free throws at 8:14. With the score 37-24 both offenses clicked over the next five-plus minutes with 27 combined points, 15 for Bucknell and 12 for Navy. Ulasewicz and Nyah Garrison scored all 12 of these points for the Mids as Ulasewicz made a layup, three-pointer and three free throws, while Garrison netted a pair of jumpers. The breakneck pace of offense continued as Bucknell scored eight points in the last 2:10 of the quarter, while Navy tallied six. A Garrison three-pointer and a Ulasewicz layup highlighted the Mids' final push in the third. In total, both teams shot 66.7 percent in the third quarter, though five turnovers by the Mids helped the Bison win the period, 29-20.

With the score 60-42 through three quarters of play, the offenses continued clicking for both teams as Navy scored seven points over the opening three minutes, while Bucknell recorded five of its own. Ulasewicz tallied the first four points for the Mids before Llewellyn put the exclamation point with a three-pointer, her second of the day. Llewellyn's trey at 7:06 kickstarted a 10-0 run by Navy that drew the visitors within nine points, 65-56 by the 5:02 mark. The Mids made four consecutive baskets during this span. Navy kept its comeback effort going and eventually cut its deficit to six, 69-63 at 1:30 on a Bishop field goal. Ulasewicz added two more points to her career-best scoring performance with a jumper with 22 seconds remaining to make it a 71-65 contest. The host Bison converted four free throws in the final seconds of the game to hold on for the 75-65 victory.

For the game, Bucknell narrowly outshot Navy 58.3 percent (28-48) to 51.1 (23-45) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-9) to 54.5 (6-11) from three-point range. The Bison also recorded a marginal advantage in free throw shooting 77.8 percent (14-18) to 76.5 (13-17).

Most Recent Matchup ~ January 22, 2020
Navy found itself in a 40-minute battle with the Boston University Terriers on Wednesday night with the Mids fighting back late to earn the 46-41 victory. In a low-scoring affair where every basket mattered, the Mids were sparked in the fourth quarter by freshman Lindsay Llewellyn netting 11 of her 14 overall points, including three three-pointers in the final 2:43 of play. Llewellyn hit the game-winning three with 3.9 seconds left in regulation to break a 41-41 tie between the Mids and Terriers (8-10, 3-4 PL) at Alumni Hall. Llewellyn's complete line for Wednesday was 14 points on 5-10 shooting and a 4-8 mark from three-point range, while corralling seven rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Her backcourt mate Morgan Taylor aided the Mids' effort with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes. The duo combined to hit six of Navy's 10 made three-pointers for the contest.

Defense dominated the early action as Navy forced six Boston turnovers in their first 12 possessions, while the Mids opened 0-9 from the field over the first 5:30 of play. This caused both teams to struggle breaking through on the scoreboard as the Terriers led just 4-0 until Mary Kate Ulasewicz broke the shutout with a three-pointer from the top of the arc at 3:07. Trailing 4-3, Navy took its first lead of the game late as Ulasewicz drove the baseline and found a wide-open Taylor on the wing for a three-pointer. That basket was the last field goal for either side as the quarter expired with the score, Navy 6 and Boston University 4. While shooting just 15.4 percent (2-13), the Mids' effort was bolstered by nine Terrier turnovers; four off of steals.

The score stayed at that 6-4 mark for nearly two minutes into the second quarter until Katie Nelson knotted the game for BU with a jumper at 8:17. With the score 9-8 in favor of the Mids, Navy scored the next 10 points during a 2:25 span of play by shooting four of six from the field with successful treys from Ulasewicz and Mimi Schrader followed by back-to-back jumpers by Laurel Jaunich. Leading by 11 points, 19-8, Navy saw Boston claw its way back into the game to make it 21-14 through 20 minutes of play.

Coming out in the second half, Navy immediately re-took an 11-point lead with four points in 18 seconds as Montana Braxton hit a layup at 9:40 before Taylor got a steal and fast break layup. After the teams traded three-pointers, Boston got within seven points on a brief 4-0 run. With the score 28-21 at the 5:15 point of the third quarter, Nyah Garrison increased the Mids' lead back to double-digits with a three-pointer. Navy would be stuck on that 31-point mark for the remainder of the third quarter as the Terriers netted the final 11 points.

Neither team had much offensive success to start the fourth quarter as Boston made the only field goal of the first three-plus minutes to expand its lead from 32-31 to 34-31. Llewellyn ended Navy's 7:59 scoreless streak with a fadeaway jumper at 6:50. Two free throws by Boston were the only points over the next 3:42 as the visitors held a 36-33 lead before Sydney Johnson made it 38-33 at 3:08. Within 56 seconds the game was tied as the Mids found their offensive mojo with a Llewellyn three-pointer and a steal and fast break layup by Taylor in quick succession. Neither team was able to break that 38-38 tie until Llewellyn sank her third three-pointer of the game with 37 seconds left in regulation. After Nelson's initial game-tying three-point attempt rattled out, the Terriers' sharpshooter re-grouped and re-tied the score at 41-41 with a trey at 0:17. Without calling a timeout, the freshmen duo of Schrader and Llewellyn worked their way down the court before Schrader fed Llewellyn on the wing for the go-ahead three-pointer with six seconds left. An unabated layup by Sophie Gatzounas gave Navy its final five-point margin of victory, 46-41.

For the game, Navy outshot Boston University, 34.0 percent (18-53) to 33.3 (16-48) from the field and 45.5 percent (10-22) to 20.0 (3-15) from three-point range. The Mids did not attempt a foul shot on Wednesday, while the Terriers were 6-11 from the charity stripe.
