ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's tennis (12-2) swept a Sunday doubleheader in its return home with a pair of 7-0 wins over George Mason (3-4) and Delaware (4-2) at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
With the two wins on Sunday, the Midshipmen have now won their last seven matches in a row.
"Another two hard-fought matches for the ladies today. It was a total team victory," head coach
Keith Puryear said. "Each player was able to play a role in the matches today. We came into both matches with a lot of respect for both teams."
Navy 7, George Mason 0
The Midshipmen started its day with a doubles sweep as
Tina Li (Jr., Wexford, Pa.) and
Irene Norman (Fr., Aurora, Ohio) first won a 6-1 decision at No. 3 and then
Jillian Taggart (Fr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) partnered with
Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 victory. The final doubles match featured
Danika Kahatapitiya (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Kacey Moore (So., Wellington, Fla.) winning a 6-4 contest as Navy led 1-0 heading into singles play.
Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) earned the first singles win for the Midshipmen after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hannah Yang at No. 3 singles. Moore rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 against Jackie Nannery as the Midshipmen jumped ahead, 3-0. Navy's clinching point came from
Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) at the top-seeded singles match, 6-2, 6-4, against Paige La.
In the final three matches on the court, Deng won a 6-2, 6-2 contest over Ashley Fitz-Patrick and then
Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C.) grabbed a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Isabella Daverio. Li secured the 7-0 win for Navy to start the day as she upended Marium Raza in straight sets at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 7-5.
"George Mason is always feisty and is well-coached in doubles," Puryear stated. "It was great that our doubles did a good job of grabbing the doubles point. We then rode the momentum into singles to secure the win. Bright spots included Annalise playing a very comprehensive match at No. 1 singles to beat a very good individual from George Mason. Jillian and Miranda also did a great job at No. 1 doubles, as well as, Tina and Irene at No. 3. Additionally, Danika and Kacey fought off a hard challenge at No. 2 doubles to win a tight match while Amanda, Kacey, Tina and Meghana all fought hard to win in straight sets."
Navy 7, Delaware 0
In the match against Delaware, the Midshipmen went ahead early in the race for the double point as the Blue Hens defaulted at No. 3 doubles. Needing just one doubles win to clinch the point,
Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Komarraju put Navy ahead 1-0 after a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 spot,
Casey Accola (Fr., Winter Garden, Fla.) and Taggart paired up to secure the doubles sweep for Navy after a 7-5 victory.
After defaulting at No. 3 doubles, the Blue Hens also defaulted at No. 6 singles to give the Midshipmen a 2-0 lead.
Samantha Choi (Fr., Warrenville, Ill.) and
Brooke Bogdanovich (Jr., Suwanee, Ga.) each won in straight sets to clinch the win for the Midshipmen. Choi won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles against Viva Laas while Bogdanovich started at No. 4 and grabbed a 7-5, 6-3 win.
Each of the final three matches split the first two sets but the Midshipmen prevailed in the final three contests to secure their second sweep of the day.
Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) won a three-set contest over Sarah Whited 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, while the matches at No. 1 and 2 each went into a third-set tiebreaker. At No. 2, Accola earned a hard-fought 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) victory and
Kaylah Hodge (Sr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) won 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (14-12) at No. 1 singles to close out the match.
"The Delaware match really showed our depth," Puryear concluded. "Delaware is a very young and talented team. We knew that even with a few injuries to some of their key players, they were still extremely dangerous. Kaylah, Aimee and Casey all fought through tough three-set battles, while Samantha and Brooke were able to secure straight-set wins today.
"Starting one match up in doubles gave us an advantage but we knew we would still need to fight to secure the second match to clinch. Katreina and Meghana played one of their most complete matches thus far this spring while Casey and Jillian fought from a break down to win their match. Tomorrow will be a well-deserved day off and we will then begin readying for next weekend's matches."
The Midshipmen are back in action next weekend for their final home doubleheader of the season as they host Johns Hopkins and Drexel on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
