ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior
Kaylah Hodge (Upper Marlboro, Md.) became the all-time doubles wins leader in program history as she won her 72nd doubles match on Saturday to break a tie with Amanda Keller. Navy (14-2) also picked up a pair of 6-1 victories against Johns Hopkins (0-1) and Drexel (8-3) to stretch their winning streak to nine-straight matches.
The Midshipmen's nine-match winning streak is tied for fifth-longest all-time in program history and tied their longest winning streak of last season. Navy's 14-2 start to the season is also the program's best since 2012 when it started 15-1 through 16 matches.
"Great all-around team performance today," head coach
Keith Puryear said. "Johns Hopkins is ranked 15th in NCAA Division III and has won 13-straight conference championships. Drexel has been super hot to start the season. They had won eight-straight matches before a 4-3 loss to Penn yesterday. We knew both matches would possess challenges but Coach Ale and I liked our responses for the most part in both matches."
Navy 6, Johns Hopkins 1
To start the day, the Midshipmen got off to a strong start after sweeping the doubles point in their first contest of the day.
Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C.) and
Miranda Deng (Jr., North Potomac, Md.) rolled to a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles and then
Danika Kahatapitiya (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Irene Norman (Fr., Aurora, Ohio) earned a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Brooke Bogdanovich (Jr., Suwanee, Ga.) and
Tina Li (Jr., Wexford, Pa.) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win No. 2 doubles, 6-3, and secured the doubles sweep.
Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) gave Navy a 2-0 advantage at No. 3 singles with her 6-1, 6-0 victory against Anjali Dervireddy. Deng followed at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Emily Javedan to put the Midshipmen on the brink of victory. The Blue Jays stopped the Navy run at No. 4 singles after Evelyn Chang outlasted Cyr in a three-set contest, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3.
With a 3-1 lead, senior captain Kahatapitiya clinched the win for Navy at No. 6 singles after winning in three sets against Dhanya Asokumar, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. In the final two matches at the top of the ladder, Bogdanovich earned a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against Sophia Strickland and
Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) swept Anjie Kashyap, 7-5, 6-3 as the Midshipmen went on to win the first half of their doubleheader, 6-1.
"Each week different players are stepping up in singles and/or doubles," Puryear commented. "Today, Amanda and Miranda played a very solid set of doubles against Hopkins while Aimee played lights out tennis against them in singles."
Navy 6, Drexel 1
In the second half of the doubleheader, Navy continued its success in doubles matches with another doubles sweep. The pair of Corpuz and
Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) got Navy started with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles against Ghita Benhadi and Cristina Corte Gonzalez. At the top-seeded doubles match, Hodge paired with
Jillian Taggart (Fr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) to grab a 6-1 victory en route to Hodge breaking the all-time doubles record. The senior now has a doubles mark of 72-29.
With the doubles point secured, Dervishian and
Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) were forced into a tiebreaker where they defeated Mya Fuentes and Tara Veluvolu, 7-6 (7-4).
Leading at the start of singles competition, Navy grabbed an early 2-0 lead after
Kacey Moore's (So., Wellington, Fla.) 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles against Sarka Richerova. The lone Drexel point came at the No. 1 spot where Salma Ziouti edged Hodge, 6-3, 6-2.
Holding just a one-point lead, Taggart gave the Midshipmen a 3-1 advantage with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles and then Klopfer grabbed 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles against Benhadi. With the match in hand, Komarraju won a straight-set match over Veluvolu at No. 5, 6-4, 6-1, and then
Casey Accola (Fr., Winter Garden, Fla.) closed out Navy's 6-1 victory with a 6-4, 6-3 contest at No. 6 singles.
"Against Drexel, our doubles was very solid and got us off to a great start," Puryear mentioned. "Our one and two teams led the way followed by Aimee and Annalise who won in a tiebreaker. Then in singles, we did a good job grabbing five first sets to keep the momentum of the match on our side. Kacey played a complete match at No. 3 to get our first singles point and was followed by Meghana, Annalise, Jill and Casey.
"We now have a well-earned day off before prepping for Temple on Saturday," Puryear concluded.
The Midshipmen wrap up the first half of their spring season next Saturday against Temple at 10:30 a.m. at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
