Women's Basketball Looks to Even Season Series with Colgate

Navy has won 14 of last 16 meetings with Colgate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After a week away from the hardwood the Navy women's basketball team will pick up its schedule with eight regular season games remaining. Set for their fourth home game in a stretch of five contests overall, the Mids (7-14, 2-8 PL) will welcome a dangerous Colgate (15-6, 7-3 PL) squad that averages nearly 70 points a game. Navy will look to take advantage of Colgate's recent road struggles as the Raider have dropped a 55-39 decision at Lafayette and a 66-43 tilt at Bucknell over their past two contests away from Hamilton, New York. Saturday's contest between the Mids and Raiders will serve as Navy's annual Breast Cancer Awareness game; fans are asked to wear pink to support this initiative. Tip-off at Alumni Hall is set for 4 p.m. with all of the action airing live online via the Patriot League Network, as well as over the radio airwaves at WNAV AM-1430 / FM-99.9.

Last Time Out
The Navy women's basketball looked to carry over its hot streak at home with a Saturday afternoon tilt versus Loyola. Winners of their past two home games, the Mids were on their way to a potential third straight win before a 5:06 scoreless streak to close out the game flipped a six-point advantage over the Greyhounds into a six-point victory for the visitors from Baltimore by a final score of 50-44. Navy led for over 30 minutes on Saturday at Alumni Hall. The duo of Lindsay Llewellyn and Sophie Gatzounas led the way for the Mids with 23 combined points, 12 for Llewellyn and 11 for Gatzounas. Both players added five rebounds each to their statline versus the Greyhounds.

Navy opened Saturday's action with a strong 9-2 start over the first 5:42 of play. After both teams netted baskets in the initial 57 seconds of play, the Mids scored the next seven points and held the Greyhounds scoreless for nearly six minutes. Llewellyn, Gatzounas and Montana Braxton all scored for Navy during this stretch, highlighted by Llewellyn sinking a transition three-pointer. Loyola had a strong rebuttal to Navy's early success with a run of three consecutive makes from 3:13 through 1:49 to tighten the game to an 11-8 score. Another Gatzounas basket with five seconds left in the quarter helped the Mids garner a five-point lead, 13-8.

On the first possession of the ensuing quarter, Llewellyn hit her second trey of the game just 10 seconds in. Trailing by eight points, Loyola was able to shave two points off of its deficit over the next three minutes to make it a 19-13 game at the 6:59 mark. A 5-0 individual run by Morgan Taylor helped the Mids grab their largest lead of the game, 11 points at 5:36 with a score of 24-13. Unfortunately for Navy, Taylor's layup was her team's last points of the first half as Loyola scored 10 unanswered to close out the first 20 minutes of play.

Coming out of the locker room holding a one-point lead, 24-23, the Mids saw the Greyhounds jump in front for the first time all day as Bri Rozzi sank a three-pointer 17 seconds into the third quarter. Navy immediately fought its way back into the lead as Llewellyn went 2-2 at the foul line and Gatzounas converted layups on back-to-back possession. With the score 30-28 in favor of Navy with 7:30 left to play in the third quarter both offenses went cold over the next four minutes as Loyola made just one field goal and one free throw, while Navy was held scoreless. The Mids found their shooting touch down the stretch in the stanza with a 7-2 run as the team pulled ahead 37-33 at the quarter break.

Navy held its lead well into the fourth quarter as the team was always up to answer a Loyola basket. The game stayed close as the Mids and Greyhounds alternated scores for the first 4:54. The exclamation point to this segment of play was a Mary Kate Ulasewicz three-pointer to make it a 44-38 game at 5:06. Similar to the end of the first half, Navy found itself closing the half with a lengthy scoreless streak as the hosts were unable to move off of that 44-point plateau for the remainder of the game. Energized by its defensive success, Loyola slowly pushed ahead of Navy by the 2:21 mark, 45-44, before adding five more points to its final total.

In their 50-44 victory, the Greyhounds outshot the Mids 38.8 percent (19-49) to 31.0 (18-58) from the field and 38.5 percent (5-13) to 16.0 (4-25) from three-point range. Only going to the foul line five times on Saturday, Navy was 4-5, while Loyola was 7-12.

Most Recent Matchup: January 11, 2020
Navy ran into a high-scoring Colgate squad on the road in Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday, Jan. 11. Coming into the matchup averaging 71.8 points per contest, tops in the Patriot League, the Raiders pulled away late from the Mids. At the conclusion of the game, Colgate was victorious 80-55 at Cotterell Court. The Mids received nearly 60 percent of its production on Saturday from its bench with the duo of Mimi Schrader and Jasmine Bishop leading the way with respective point totals of 11 and nine. Schrader's final line also included three three-pointers and two rebounds over 28 minutes, while Bishop sank one three-pointer and corralled four rebounds in 21 minutes.

After Colgate started the contest by scoring the first six points, Lindsay Llewellyn got Navy on the board with a three-pointer from the wing. The Raiders' offense kept clicking as the hosts hit seven of their first eight shots to net 17 points over the first six-plus minutes of play. The Mids hung tight during this span as the freshmen trio of Schrader, Llewellyn and Nyah Garrison combined for eight points with three-pointers by Schrader and Garrison leading the way. The score was 17-15 following a Montana Braxton turnaround jumper in the paint at 3:11. Colgate didn't let Navy get any closer as the Raiders ran off eight unanswered points to expand its lead out to 10, 25-15. Schrader's second three-pointer of the quarter closed the scoring in the period at 25-18 in favor of Colgate.

The quarter break did nothing to slow Colgate's offense as the Raiders came out the gate with a quick 5-0 run. Trailing 30-18, 2:11 into the second quarter, the Mids battled back with two physical baskets on consecutive possessions. Braxton made the first field goal with a layup in the paint before she fought for an offensive rebound and shot a pass out to Sophie Gatzounas for a jumper at the top of the paint. This hard-nosed effort on the offensive end continued for the Mids as Gatzounas grabbed a rebound and immediately put up a shot at 5:27 to make it a 32-24 game. While Navy had to battle for each of their baskets, Colgate continued its blistering shooting effort with a streak of five makes in six possessions, with an additional two points coming from the foul line. This run helped the Raiders expand their lead out to 18, 44-26 by the 1:52 mark. The teams retired to their locker rooms with the score 44-29, Colgate.

Mary Kate Ulasewicz was everywhere for the Mids over the first three minutes of the second half. Trying to will her club back into the contest, Ulasewicz blocked a fast break layup, stripped a Colgate defensive rebound for a quick fadeaway jumper before later hitting a three-pointer at 7:28 to make it 48-34. The Raiders responded to Ulasewicz' effort with a 4-0 run to build their lead back out to 18 points by the 5:46 point in the third quarter. The momentum swung back to the Mids with a 7-1 response from 4:52 through 3:14. The final three-plus minutes played out with each team recording five points, including Schrader's third three-pointer of the contest.

Coming out in the fourth quarter with the score 58-46 for Colgate, the host Raiders built out a 23-point lead in short order within the first four minutes, 69-46. The Mids were held off the scoreboard until Ciera Hertelendy found a cutting Llewellyn at 5:01 to make it 71-48. Bishop found her shooting touch late for Navy with five of the team's final seven points down the stretch. Schrader netted the other basket for the Mids as she completed her first double-digit scoring output with a layup at 1:22.

In the 80-55 victory for Colgate, the Raiders outshot the Mids, 57.9 percent (33-57) to 35.6 (21-59) from the field and 54.5 percent (6-11) to 25.8 (8-31) from three-point range. Navy converted five of its six attempts for a 83.3 percent mark. Colgate was solid as well from the charity stripe with a 72.7 percent (8-11) effort.
