ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's tennis (5-2) fell behind early but won three-straight singles matches to rally and jump ahead of Big Ten foe Indiana (4-2). However, the Hoosiers battled back with three-straight singles wins of their own to outlast the Midshipmen in a 4-3 decision on Friday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
Navy had the lone two straight-set wins on the day as four of the six singles matches went into three sets, while the doubles point was determined in a tiebreaker in a close matchup.
To start the match, both teams traded runs on all three doubles courts. Navy won the first match of the afternoon at No. 3 doubles with
Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) and
Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) beating Rose Hu and Michelle McKamey in a 6-2 contest.
The pair of
Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and
Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) fell behind 4-1 early in the match at No. 1 doubles but won back-to-back games to cut their deficit to one. However, the comeback attempt from the Mids fell short after dropping the match at No. 1, 6-3, to Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Jelly Bozovic.
With the race for the doubles point all knotted at one, the second-seeded doubles match continued to be a seesaw battle.
Kaylah Hodge (Sr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) and
Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C.) trailed 5-2 but fought back to grab a 6-5 advantage. The Hoosiers duo of Caitlin Bernard and Alexandra Staiculescu tied the match at six and forced a tiebreaker. Each team traded points to start and the tiebreaker was tied at three at the turn. After the turn, Bernard and Staiculescu took over and won the tiebreaker 7-4 to win the matchup at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (7-4), and secure the doubles point for the Hoosiers.
After falling behind early, the Midshipmen battled back into the match and took the lead after winning three-straight singles matches. Following a narrow loss in doubles, Hodge rebounded with a straight-set win over Bernard at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Navy grabbed the lead moments later after Klopfer picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles against Staiculescu.
With the final four matches all going into three sets,
Samantha Choi (Fr., Warrenville, Ill.) extended Navy's lead to 3-1 following a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles against Hu.
Indiana started to battle into the match with Bozovic outlasting Komarraju at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4. The Hoosiers tied the match at three points each with McKamey rallying from a set down to beat Corpuz, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
The final match left on the court featured
Kacey Moore (So., Wellington, Fla.) taking on Andrinopoulos at No. 2 singles. Moore fell behind early and lost the opening set, 6-2, but she rallied in the second set to win in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3). In the third and decisive set, Moore and Andrinopoulos traded games in the early going of the third set. Andrinopoulos took a 4-3 lead in the set and never looked back to edge out Moore, 6-3, in the third set to clinch the 4-3 victory for Indiana.
Navy is back in action on Saturday for two more home matches. The Midshipmen host Georgetown at 12:30 p.m. and then they take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 6:30 p.m.
