Women’s Tennis Bounces Back with Two Wins on Saturday

Navy now sits at 7-2 on the season

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After a narrow loss on Friday, Navy women's tennis (7-2) rebounded on Saturday afternoon to sweep its Saturday doubleheader against Georgetown (1-4) and Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

The Midshipmen started the day with a 7-0 win over the Hoyas, which is Navy's fourth 7-0 victory of their 2020 campaign and first 7-0 win over Georgetown in program history. The Midshipmen then capped off their day with a 6-1 victory against Fairleigh Dickinson. Navy has now beaten the Knights in all three meetings between the two programs.

"One of the things we talked about was being resilient and one of the commonalities you see with good teams is bouncing back, and bouncing back after a tough loss and sometimes after a big win and I thought we did a good job of that today," head coach Keith Puryear said about his team rebounding with two wins on Saturday. "Both Georgetown and Fairleigh Dickinson are young but very talented. With us splitting our forces we knew everyone was going to have to play a role, everyone was going to have to step up and I thought we did a good job of that.

"I am really pleased with most of what I saw, but still there are always things we are going to want to continue to focus on and continue to work on to get better. I do like the strides we are making and we have to continue working, get through six-week exams, and we are looking forward to next week's matches."

In the second of three matches over a two-day stretch, the Midshipmen got off to a strong start with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles from Miranda Deng (Jr., North Potomac, Md.) and Jillian Taggart (Fr., Fair Oaks, Calif.). Navy clinched the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead in the match with Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) and Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) grabbing a 6-3 win at the second-seeded doubles match. The Midshipmen were unable to sweep doubles after Olivia Ashton and Anna Short edged out Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) at No. 1 doubles.

Navy continued its strong play in singles competition and won all six matches in straight sets. After helping secure the doubles point for Navy, Dervishian doubled the Midshipmen's lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Brooke Bogdanovich (Jr., Suwanee, Ga.) gave Navy a 3-0 advantage in the match following her win over Chole Bendetti at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0. The clinching point for the Midshipmen came at the top-seeded singles match with Klopfer sweeping Sofie Moenster, 6-0, 6-3.

With the match in hand, Komarraju won a 6-3, 6-1 contest at No. 2 singles against Agata Mikos and then Corpuz earned a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Ashton at No. 3. In the final match of the weekend for the Midshipmen, they fell behind early trying to win the doubles after Amina Lasheen and Shreya Guila beat Bogdanovich and Irene Norman (Fr., Aurora, Ohio) at No. 3 doubles, 6-1. Trailing by a match for the doubles point, Navy rallied at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the early lead and win the doubles point. At the second-seeded doubles match, the duo of Choi and Tina Li (Jr., Wexford, Pa.) picked up a 6-3 victory against Patricia Eftenoiu and Anamaria Vladescu.

After rallying to win the doubles point, the Midshipmen carried their momentum into singles and won three-straight matches to clinch the contest. Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C.) got the run started at No. 4 singles and raced to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Smriti Singh. On court three, Accola picked up her second win of the night with a straight-set win against Lasheen, 6-1, 6-2. With the match in hand for the Midshipmen, Fairleigh Dickinson got its first and only point of the night at No. 1 singles with Kubanova grabbing a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Kacey Moore (So., Wellington, Fla.). Hodge pushed Navy's lead to four points after closing out a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles against Vorozheikina. The final match on the court was the lone contest to go into three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Li bounced back to win the next two sets to upend Eftenoiu, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 and secured the 6-1 team win for the Midshipmen.

Navy is back at home next Saturday to host Howard and Mount St. Mary's in the final two matches of the Midshipmen's 11-match homestand.
