Semifinalists
Casey Cobb (133 / Jr / Kuna, Idaho),
Cody Trybus (141 / Jr / Elkton, Md.),
Tanner Skidgel (165 / Jr / Tulsa, Okla.) and
Spencer Carey (174 / Sr / Ringwood, N.J.) are among the seven Navy wrestlers who will advance to Saturday's competition as the opening day of the 116th EIWA Championship held at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa. came to a close Friday evening. The Midshipmen stand fourth in the team standings with 61.5 points.
In addition to the semifinalists, Navy has three wrestlers -
Jared Prince (149 / Sr / Safety Harbor, Fla.),
Jack Stanton-Taddeo (157 / Jr / Wading River, N.Y.) and
Jacob Koser (197 / Fr / Dillsburg, Pa.) - who advanced via the consolation bracket.
The only Navy wrestler who has clinched an NCAA berth is Skidgel, who can finish no worse than sixth in the competition and six are assured an bid. Meanwhile, Cobb must make the finals to earn an NCAA bid, while Trybus must finish fifth or better, Prince fourth or better, Stanton-Taddeo third or better, Carey fourth or better and Koser sixth or better.
Defending EIWA Champion Lehigh finds itself atop the team standings with a 14-point cushion over Army (87.5 - 73.5). Cornell stands third with 68.5 points, followed by Navy (61.5) and Princeton (56.0). Lehigh, Army and Cornell all have nine wrestlers remaining in the competition, Lehigh with seven in Saturday's semis, Army with six and Cornell with five. Twelve different schools will have wrestlers competing in the semis.
The EIWA received 44 automatic bids to the NCAA Championship (March 19-21 at U.S. Bank Stadium / Minneapolis) when the NCAA announced its qualifier allocations last week. Each qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data including Division I winning percentage, RPI and a coaches ranking. Wrestlers who fail to qualify this weekend will be eligible for one of 47 at-large berths which will be announced on Tuesday, March 10. Automatic qualifier allocations for the EIWA are as follows:Â 7 at 125, 2 at 133, 5 at 141, 4 at 149, 3 at 157, 6 at 165, 4 at 174, 4 at 184, 6 at 197 and 3 at 285.
Competition resumes Saturday morning at 10:00 am with the semifinals and consolation quarterfinals.
