Annual Navy Wrestling Team Awards Announced

Despite the cancellation of the annual Navy wrestling banquet due to COVID-19, the Navy wrestling staff has announced the winners of this year's team awards.

> Ed Peery Award
Given in honor of former Navy Wrestling Coach (1960-87) and National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Ed Peery. The award is presented to the Navy wrestler who demonstrates outstanding leadership, work ethic and competitive spirit

2019-20 recipient - Spencer Carey / Senior / Ringwood, N.J.
• 2019-20 Team Captain
• 2019-20 record: 21-8 / 9-4 dual  // Career record: 61-34 / 14-8 dual
• Two-time NCAA qualifier (2019, '20)

> Travis Manion Memorial Wrestling Trophy
Presented by the Trustees, Athletic and Scholarship Programs, U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, to the Navy wrestler from the graduating class who displayed outstanding leadership and work habits throughout his career. This wrestler has great qualities of aggressiveness, determination, good sportsmanship and compassion for others. The team's success and the success of the program are more important to this individual than personal success.

2019-20 recipient - Jared Prince / Senior / Safety Harbor, Fla.
• 2019-20 record: 8-2 / 3-1 dual // Career record: 77-28 / 15-5 dual
• Four-time NCAA qualifier (2017, '18, '19, '20) / one of just eight four-time NCAA qualifiers in program history
• Four-time EIWA placewinner (2017, '18, '19, '20)

> Brett J. Harman Award
Given to the Navy wrestler who demonstrates selfless character in both thought and action; an individual who routinely puts the team ahead of himself. This person is able to maintain a positive attitude in spite of adversity and his disposition lifts the morale of his teammates. His infectious attitude toward life and the sport of wrestling inspires those around him to excel in sport and life

2019-20 recipient - Tanner Skidgel / Junior / Tulsa, Okla.
• 2019-20 record: 20-4, 7-2 dual // Career record: 46-17 / 14-5 dual
• Two-time NCAA qualifier (2019, '20)
• Two-time EIWA Champion (2019, '20)

> Lt. Cmdr. Weems Award
In memory of Lieutenant Commander George Thackray Weems, the award is presented to the Navy wrestler who displays aggressiveness, determination, good sportsmanship and team spirit

2019-20 recipient - Cody Trybus / Junior / Elkton, Md.
• 2019-20 record: 25-9, 9-5 dual / Career record: 53-27, 16-9 dual
• First-time NCAA qualifier (2020)
• First-time EIWA Champion (2020)
• Led the team in wins, reaching the 20-win milestone for the first time in his career.

> Coaches Award
The Coaches Award goes to the Midshipman who displayed great leadership and work habits throughout the season.

2019-20 recipient - Casey Cobb / Junior / Kuna, Idaho
• 2019-20 record: 17-13, 4-6 dual / Career record: 42-24, 10-10 dual
• First-time NCAA qualifier (2020)

2019-20 recipient - John Birchmeier / Freshman / Ashburn, Va.
•2019-20 record: 16-9, 6-6 dual / Career record: 16-9, 6-6 dual
• Won All-Academy Championship
• Season cut short just a handful of weeks before EIWA Championship due to injury

> Team Performance Award
This award is presented to the Midshipman who is always ready and performs at a high level when called upon.

> Iron N Award
The recipient of the Iron N Award is someone who consistently exemplifies characteristics of discipline, focus and attitude day in and day out. The weight room is another opportunity for any athlete to improve mentally and physically, while building confidence, courage and cohesion. This award goes to the person who maximizes every opportunity to do just that.

2019-20 recipient - Riley Smith / Sophomore / Mason, Mich.
• 2019-20 record: 12-17, 0-2 dual / Career record: 18-23, 0-2 dual

> Most Wins Award
Awarded to the Navy wrestler who earns the most wins during the season.

Given in honor of former Navy Wrestling Coach (1938-60) and National Wrestling Hall of Fame Member Ray Swartz. This award is presented to the Navy wrestler achieving the most falls in the least aggregate time.

• Reached 20-win milestone for the first time in his career

> Most Promising Freshman Award
The Most Promising Freshman Award is presented to the Navy wrestler of the freshman class that performed above his peers throughout the season.

2019-20 recipient - Jacob Koser / Freshman / Dillsburg, Pa.
• 2019-20 record: 21-9, 11-3 dual / Career record: 21-9, 11-3 dual
• Led Navy in dual victories and tied for the second-most overall victories
• Named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the All-Academy Championship and won his weight class
• Named an alternate for the 2020 NCAA Championship
