ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Sophomore
Jacob Koser (Dillsburg, Pa.) has been named the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman after his victory over 15th-ranked Jake Jakobsen clinched the team win over 18th-ranked Lehigh on Saturday evening.
After dropping their first-two matches of the evening by a combined three points, the Mids went on to win seven of the final eight bouts to secure the 21-9 victory over the Mountain Hawks at Alumni Hall in Annapolis. While Navy held a six-point advantage (15-9) going into the 197-pound match, on paper, Jakobsen would be the favorite over Koser with his national ranking. Koser, though, would be on the attack from the opening whistle and earned his first-collegiate victory over a ranked wrestler by posting the 6-1 win. His win eliminated any chance for the Mountain Hawks to come back in the match.
It was Navy's first win over the reigning EIWA champions since edging Lehigh 19-15 in Annapolis on Jan. 15, 2011, and only the third win by Navy in the series over the last 25 meetings (2007, 2011, 2021). Additionally, the Mids held Lehigh to single digits for the first time in the series since Jan. 28, 1995, when Navy produced a 22-9 victory.
Koser and the Midshipmen (2-1, 1-0 EIWA) will return to action a week from Saturday (Jan. 30) when they face Cleveland State at Alumni Hall. The dual is slated to begin at 5:00 pm and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. A series that dates back to 1977, the two programs have previously met four times. However, it's been a quarter of a century since they last met as Navy scored a 23-9 victory over the Vikings on Jan. 13, 1996, in Cleveland.
