KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jacob Williams (Sr., Millersville, Md.) earned honors as the United Soccer Coaches Men's NCAA Division I National Player of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday.
Williams, who garnered honors as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday, led the Navy men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over rival Army in Army-Navy Cup X Saturday in Chester, Pa. by scoring each of the three goals for the Midshipmen against the Black Knights.
Williams opened the Navy scoring effort in the 14th minute, breaking away from the Army defense and lining a shot into the bottom, right-hand corner of the net to give the Mids a one-score advantage. The senior added to his scoring ledger at the 15:28 mark, sending a blistering shot through the Black Knight backline, netting his second goal of the match to extend the Mids' lead to two scores.
The senior forward secured the Star Match victory for Navy with his third goal of the contest in the 82nd minute, marking the 53rd hat trick in program history and fourth against Army.
The hat trick by Williams was the first for the Midshipmen since the 2012 season, along with being the first three-score effort against Army since the 1999.
On the season, the senior leads the team in goals (5), game-winning scores (3), total shots (50), and shots on goal (20) while ranking second in points (11) and tied for third in assists (1).
Navy - who currently sits atop the Patriot League standings with an overall record of 9-1-1 and a 4-1-0 mark in league play – is set to return to action Saturday as it travels to Baltimore for a Patriot League contest against Loyola. Opening kick of the match is slated for 5 p.m.
