Single Weekend Match at Holy Cross Ahead of Volleyball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy volleyball team will travel to Massachusetts this weekend for a match at Holy Cross.  The Mids (7-10, 3-5 Patriot League) and the Crusaders (2-17, 1-7) will meet for the second time in eight days when they square off Saturday at 4 p.m. in Blaney Gymnasium.

Navy dropped a three-set decision to American Wednesday night in Annapolis.  The Eagles prevailed by set scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.

The Mids put together a strong blocking night as they held a 10-6 edge in that statistic, but American held a 45-31 lead in kills and a .208-.132 advantage in hitting percentage.

Avery Stowell (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) registered 14 kills and just one error on 35 attempts for a .371 hitting percentage to lead the Navy offense.

The Crusaders registered a 3-1 victory over Lehigh Sunday in Worcester.  Holy Cross defeated the Mountain Hawks, 25-20, 25-21, 16-25, 25-19, for its first win of the league season.

Navy defeated Holy Cross in three sets last week in Annapolis.  The Mids posted a 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 victory over the Crusaders in the Wesley A. Brown Field House.  

The biggest statistical differences between the teams were in kills and aces.  Navy held a 44-29 lead in the former and an 11-5 edge in the latter.  

The Mids had a very balanced offense in the match as a middle hitter, outside hitter and opposite hitter each totaled at least 10 kills in the match.  Outside hitter Cami Herman (Sr., Brookfield, Wis.) led the way with 12 kills, middle hitter Maggie Bodman (So., Northbrook, Ill.) had 11 kills and opposite hitter Stowell recorded 10 kills.  That trio combined for 33 of Navy's 44 kills in the match, with Herman and Stowell each also adding three aces.  Defensively, Tessa Bohn (Jr., Nokomis, Fla.) totaled 12 digs.

Gracyn Benck led the Holy Cross offense with 10 kills and a .318 attack percentage and Mia Hofacker added nine kills, a .273 hitting percentage and three blocks.  Additionally, Skye Daval-Santos grabbed a match-high 15 digs.
