Most Recent Navy-UVM Matchup ~ November 22, 2019 in Burlington
Navy dropped a competitive 64-56 contest on the road at the University of Vermont on Friday, Nov. 22. Playing its first game in 11 days, the Mids ran into a sharp-shooting Catamount squad that connected on 58.8 percent of its three-point attempts in the action at Patrick Gymnasium. Close throughout the majority of the contest, Vermont withstood a third quarter Navy comeback attempt before pulling away for the eight-point victory.
A pair of New England natives spearheaded Navy's efforts on Friday as
Sophie Gatzounas ('21) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while
Laurel Jaunich ('20) added 11 points and seven rebounds in her first game in Patrick Gymnasium since playing in the Vermont High School State Championship in 2016 with her Champlain Valley Union team. Jaunich grew up 15 miles from the UVM campus in Charlotte, Vt.
The Vermont native got the Mids into the scoring column early with the game's first points, a three-pointer at 8:04. After a Vermont basket made it 3-2, Jaunich came back down in the next possession with her second made field goal, a driving layup off of a
Jennifer Coleman pass.
Mary Kate Ulasewicz ('20) helped the visitors extend their lead out to 8-2 as she sank a three-pointer at 6:02. Over the next three-plus minutes of play, the Catamounts went an 8-2 run of their own to knot the game at 10-10 by the first quarter media timeout at 3:35. For the remainder of the period, Vermont outscored Navy, 4-2 to take a 14-12 lead into the first quarter intermission.
Down two points coming out of the break, Jaunich netted her sixth and seventh points of the contest with a long two-pointer 33 seconds into the second quarter to re-tie the game at 14-14. The Mids were unable to flip the score back in their favor as the hosts rattled off a 20-8 run over the next nine minutes. With score 34-22 and time expiring, Gatzounas made it a single-digit deficit going into the locker room as she banked in a three-pointer as time expired.
Navy immediately started chipping away at its deficit as Gatzounas successfully drove for a layup on the Mids' first possession of the third quarter. After a brief 4-0 rebuttal by Vermont made it 38-27 at 8:20, Navy came roaring back with nine unanswered points, including six from
Kolbi Green via two three-pointers. With the score 38-36 at 4:50, the action for the remainder of the third quarter was even for most of the way with each team scoring six points until a late three-pointer by Vermont's Delaney Richason made it 47-42 at the completion of 30 minutes of action.
A fast start to the fourth quarter by the Catamounts' offense helped the hosts extend their lead out to 12 points, 60-48 by the 4:30 mark. Vermont made five of its first six shots, including a pair of three-pointers. The same combination of leading scorers in the first half, Jaunich, Gatzounas and Ulasewicz, recorded all of the points for Navy down the stretch, but unfortunately the Mids' comeback attempt would prove insufficient as the Catamounts' lead never fell below eight points as they held on for the 64-56 win.
For the game, Vermont outshot Navy, 50.0 percent (24-48) to 36.7 percent (22-60) from the field and 58.8 percent (10-17) to 33.3 percent (6-18) from three-point range. Both teams made six free throws, Navy was 66.7 percent (6-9), while Vermont was 42.9 percent (6-14). The rebounding battle was nearly equal as Vermont edged Navy in the category, 34-33. The Mids' total was aided by 11 offensive boards. Gatzounas spearheaded Navy's effort with a season-high 10 rebounds. Jaunich added seven rebounds. Navy was clean with its ball control with a 13-to-5 assist-to-turnover ratio. Taylor recorded a career-best five assists to lead the Mids.

Last Time Out, Tuesday versus William & Mary
Battling back from a 12-point halftime deficit the Navy women's basketball team played a sterling brand of well-rounded basketball in the final 20 minutes of action at Alumni Hall on Tuesday night to defeat William & Mary, 66-54. Bolstered by a scorching hot 11-for-16 outing from the field in the third quarter, the Mids (1-2) outscored the Tribe (1-2) by 23 points and flipped the game back in their favor on the way to their first victory of the young 2021-22 season.
Navy's offensive performance on Tuesday night was dominated by the trio of Jennifer Coleman, Kolbi Green and Sydne Watts, who combined for 94 percent of the Mids' scoring against the Tribe with 62 of the host's 66 points. Coleman and Watts each tallied career-high totals as Coleman shot 75 percent (9-12) from the field and 80 percent (8-10) from the foul line on her way to 26 points, while Watts was hitting shots at a 66.7 percent (8-12) clip from the field with one three-point basket for 17 points. Green also shot over 60 percent (9-14) with a three-pointer as she finished with 19 points. Playing all 40 minutes versus William & Mary, Coleman and Green filled up the box score with a plethora of secondary stats as Coleman completed her 18th career double-double with 10 rebounds and an additional seven assists and four steals. Her backcourt mate Green was credited with five assists, five steals and one blocked shot.
After a fair even first period that saw William & Mary take a 17-13 lead into the quarter break, the second stanza had a significant Tribe feel to it in the opening half of it as the visitors scored 14 of the first 16 points to break open a 31-15 lead by the 4:42 mark. Navy slowly edged closer as the Mids aimed to get back within single digits before the halftime intermission. Coleman and Green spearheaded this effort as the duo combined for 10 of Navy's 12 points down the stretch. Down 10 points at 37-27 with 17 seconds remaining, a Bre Bellamy layup before the buzzer closed the first half with William & Mary ahead by 12, 39-27.
The game was turned upside down in the third period as the Mids went small with their lineup and inserted Mimi Schrader to give them a four-guard look. A precursor to next 10 minutes occurred in the first two possessions of the quarter as Navy forced a William & Mary turnover before Green grabbed an offensive rebound and quickly made a put-back layup for the Mids. That turnover by the Tribe was the first of 10 in the period, while the Mids' basket was the first of 11 successful field goals. Green's score sparked a quick 7-0 run over the first 55 seconds and Navy was within five at 39-34. After William & Mary scored on its next two times down the court to go back up seven, 43-36, Navy shut out its opponent for the final 7:26 of the quarter. Not willing to rest on their defensive laurels during this run, the Mids' offense was in high gear with Coleman, Watts and Green all scoring at will. Closing the period on an 18-0 run, Navy turned a seven-point deficit into an 11-point lead of 54-43. For the quarter, the trio netted all 27 points with Coleman going for 11, Watts nine and Green seven. As a team, Navy shot 68.8 percent for the period and had quality distribution as well with seven assists on 11 made baskets.
The Mids' scoring run was extended to into the fourth quarter with baskets by Watts and Green over the opening 74 seconds. That 22-0 run helped Navy go up 58-43 at 8:46. Comfortably ahead by double-digits the Mids never let the Tribe get closer than 10 the rest of the game as William & Mary made it a 64-54 with 1:01 to go. A layup by Green on the next possession rounded out the scoring on Tuesday night as the game went final at 66-54.
For the game, Navy outshot William & Mary, 54.0 percent (27-50) to 41.0 (25-61) from the field and 52.6 percent (10-19) to 50.0 (1-2) at the foul line. Neither team had much success from three-point range as the Tribe shot 16.7 percent (3-18) versus 13.3 percent (2-15) for the Mids.
Defensively, the Mids forced the Tribe into 21 turnovers and were credited with 12 steals. Green and Coleman were at the forefront of the theft department as Green finished with five steals, one more than her senior classmate.
