PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Navy sprint football team (7-0, 3-0) posted a 52-14 victory over Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) South Division rival Penn (5-2, 2-1) on Saturday night at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. With the win, Navy claimed the South Division title, earning a spot in the CSFL Championship game against North Division winner Army next week at Mansfield University's Karl Van Norman Field in Mansfield, Pa.
"I am very proud of the way our team closed out the regular season,"
Major Alfonso Meidus, USMC said of his team following the game. "We are extremely excited for the opportunity to play in the CSFL Championship game and will get to work preparing for next week."
Offensively, Navy tallied 488 total yards of offense, including 363 rushing yards and 125 yards passing. The Mids recorded seven rushing touchdowns on the night. Offensive team captain
Matthew McGee (Port Charlotte, Fla.) led the offense with 194 rushing yards, scoring a pair of touchdowns.
Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) finished with just 54 yards, but led the team with four TDs on the ground. Starting quarterback
William Leong (Irvine, Calif.) added 85 yards rushing, while
Tyron Francis Jr. (Middletown, R.I.) finished with a score.
Leong was 14-for-23 passing for 119 yards.
Luke Wagner (Edmond, Okla.) entered the game in relief, finishing 2-for-6 for six yards.
Marco Pezzini (Salinas, Calif.) paced a balanced receiving corps with five receptions for 30 yards.
Jack Masterson (Reno, Nev.) added four catches for 27 yards, while
Jake Smith (Union, Ky.) led the team with 36 yards on three receptions. Totta added one catch for 21 yards to his stat line.
Defensively, Navy finished with 8.0 tackles for loss, including 5.0 sacks with three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble. The Midshipmen held the potent Quaker offense, who entered the game averaging more than 44 points per game, to 14 points. The Mids held the home team to 205 total yards, including 129 yards passing and 76 rushing yards with 11 first downs.
Devyn Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the defense with 10 total tackles, including five solo stops, with 3.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.
Nadir Emlemdi (Cincinnati, Ohio),
Mike Garnett (Dallas, Texas), and
Jobe Long (Bay City, Mich.) each finished with interceptions, while
Nicholas Campbell (Allentown, N.J.) and Smith recovered fumbles in the game. In addition,
David Niski (Shelton Conn.) forced a fumble in the game.
Kicker
Mychal Golden (Jonesboro, Ark.) finished the game with 10 points. The sophomore was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points, while adding a 43-yard field goal.
In the first quarter, the Midshipmen used a pair of rushing touchdowns to take an early lead. McGee capped a 13-play, 74-yard drive with an eight-yard rush into the end zone for his first score of the day. The running came continued to shine as the Midshipmen used a 24-yard scamper into the end zone by Totta to increase the margin to 14-0.
The 1-2 punch of McGee and Totta struck again in the second quarter. Totta used a one-yard plunge into the end zone to close out an eight-play, 50-yard drive for his second TD of the night. McGee followed with a 21-yard run for a score to end a four-play, 56-yard scoring drive to go into halftime in front 28-0.
In the second half, the Midshipmen picked up where they left off. Navy received the opening kickoff and drove the ball down the field 69 yards on 10 plays for the touchdown. Totta capped off the run with a three-yard rush to paydirt. The Penn defense held Navy to a field goal attempt on the Mids' second drive of the half. Golden split the uprights from 43-yards out to push the advantage to 38-0. An interception gave Navy a short field and Totta found the end zone for the fourth time, scoring from nine yards out to extend the advantage to 45-0.
Penn cracked the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. A short punt out of the Navy end zone gave the home team a short field. The Quakers needed just three plays to go 19 yards for a touchdown, ending the play with a 13-yard TD pass to cut the margin to 45-7. Working with a short field after Navy covered a Penn fumble inside the five yardline, Francis took a pitch from Wagner and trotted four yards into the end zone to extend the advantage to 52-7. The Quakers used a long methodical drive to score their second touchdown of the game. The hosts marched down the field 85 yards on 16 plays before quarterback Andrew Paolini split the Navy defense for a 17-yard TD rush to cut the margin to 52-14.
Navy returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 13, as the Midshipmen take on Army in the Collegiate Sprint Football League Championship game at Mansfield University's Karl Van Norman Field in Mansfield, Pa. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. and live video and stats will be available.
