Women's Basketball Opens 2021-22 Season with Home Tilt versus Georgetown

Navy returns 10 players and was picked sixth in the Patriot League

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's basketball team kicks off its 2021-22 season on Tuesday with a home contest against Georgetown University. Coming off an abridged 2020-21 season that was hampered by the on-going COVID-19 pandemic and multiple modifications of the schedule due to protocols associated with the pandemic, the Mids are looking forward to a full 28-game campaign with 10 non-conference matchups before heading into Patriot League play at the end of December. The first of Navy's 10 non-Patriot League games lie ahead on Tuesday night when Georgetown makes the short trip from Washington, D.C. for a 7 p.m. contest at Alumni Hall on the campus of the United States Naval Academy. Picked sixth in the Patriot League Preseason Coaches Poll, the Mids return an experienced roster with seven upperclassmen and four more sophomores, who all were part of the rotation last season. The action in Annapolis will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats also available through NavySports.com.

ESPN+ is a subscription-based streaming service that requires patrons to sign-up for monthly or yearly plans prior to tuning into the contest.

Breaking Down the 2021-22 Mids
This season's edition of the Midshipmen will be looking to fight its way back to the upper tier of the Patriot League under the guidance of second-year head Tim Taylor. After COVID-19 protocols forced Navy out of the season-ending Patriot League Tournament prior to it beginning, the Mids return ready to leave their mark on the Patriot League this year. As a program, Navy brings back nearly 80 percent of its scoring firepower led by seniors Jennifer Coleman and Kolbi Green, who posted averages of 17.1 and 13.4 points per game as juniors. Additionally, senior team captain Ciera Hertelendy will be back to man the post for the Mids after breaking through as the team's Most Improved Player Award recipient in 2020-21.

Seniors
The trio of Coleman, Green and Hertelendy will man three of Navy's positions in the starting five for the second straight season ... Coleman earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors in 2020-21 after averaging a double-double with 17.1 points and 11.3 rebounds over 36.9 minutes per game. Additionally, she recorded 4.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Coleman was top-four in all five of those categories amongst Patriot League players, ranking second in rebounds, assists and minutes, while standing third in scoring and fourth in steals. The Richmond native was one of five players selected to the 2021-22 Preseason All-Patriot League Team ... Green, the Mids' starting shooting guard, has developed her game from long-range bomber to a well-rounded two-way talent as she shot a career-best 36.9 percent last season and averaged 13.4 points, 2.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Navy's 2020-21 Defensive Player of the Year, Green led the Patriot League in steals per game and ranked 33rd in NCAA DI ... After starting once in her first two seasons of action, Hertelendy suited up in all 12 games for the Mids in 2020-21 and made 10 starts in the post. Physical near the basket, Hertelendy ranked first on the team with 1.0 blocks and third with 6.2 rebounds per contest ... The trio will be joined by the returning Darryl Langford, who had participated with Navy's track & field program for the past two and half years. Competing the majority of the time in the high jump and long jump events, Langford walked on during the preseason this fall and has seen time as a forward to take advantage of her standout athleticism. As a member of the basketball team as a freshman in 2018-19, Langford appeared in five games and netted 15 points in 28 combined minutes of action.

Juniors
The Mids' junior class will be looking to get back on the court after injuries significantly derailed the 2020-21 campaigns for Mimi Schrader and Imani Edmonds. Lindsay Llewellyn was able to skirt the injury bug for most of the campaign and will be looking to continue growing her game this season ... Llewellyn, a starter in seven games as a sophomore in 2020-21, averaged a career-high in points, scoring 7.7 per game, while improving her field goal percentage to 34.9 percent. The Maryland native also showed more aggression on the glass as she combined to grab 19 rebounds over a three-game stretch from Jan. 17 to Jan. 24 last season ... The Mids' starting point guard for season opener at George Mason last November, Schrader was quickly beset by injuries and found herself unable to suit up in any of Navy's final nine games of the campaign. In limited action, she averaged 1.7 points and 2.0 assists over three games ... After battling injuries her freshman season and only making her way into four games as a plebe, Edmonds was trending towards breaking through as an athletic two-way guard in Tim Taylor's new system as a sophomore before she was knocked out of action for the entire 2020-21 campaign in the preseason. Impressing the coaching staff this preseason, Edmonds could quickly find her way into a pivotal position in the rotation.

Sophomores
Navy's Class of 2024 received its first collegiate action in 2020-21 and showed glimpses of future success from all four of its members: Sydne Watts, Morganne Andrews, Kristina Donza and Sam Schofield ... Appearing in nine games with four starts as a forward, Watts made her first collegiate start in Navy's season opener at George Mason and left an immediate impact as she posted season-highs in that game with 12 points and six rebounds over 37 minutes of play. She averaged 4.7 points and 3.1 rebounds during her freshman season ... Similar to Watts, Andrews was a member of the Mids' starting five in the season opener at George Mason in the frontcourt. A formidable player on the glass, she recorded 23 rebounds over the first three games the season, including a high of 10 boards against William & Mary. She finished with a season stat-line of 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 points per game ... One of three Mids to play in all 12 games in 2020-21, Donza played a key role in Navy's backcourt rotation as a long-range sharpshooter with 24 of 36 field goal attempts from three-point range. In her first collegiate start at Morgan State, she posted season-highs with 10 points, three assists and three steals over 35 minutes against the Bears ... Schofield showed a similar proclivity for shooting three-pointers as 11 of her 16 field goal attempts were from distance in 2020-21. Her breakout game came on Feb. 17 against Lafayette when she came off the bench and netted 12 points on four three-pointers in 16 minutes of action.

Freshmen
Navy adds some size to its roster in the form of Kriss Arjukese and Savanna Lewis. Both standing 6'0 or taller, the duo has been working hard to add to the Mids' frontcourt depth during the preseason ... A three-sport athlete at The Bullis School in nearby Potomac, Maryland, Arjukese was recognized as her school's Team MVP and highest regarded three-point shooter during her high school career. She played at the club level with Team Takeover out of the DC area ... Lewis travelled across the United States to get to Annapolis as she is a native of Los Lunas, New Mexico. Playing all five positions on the court for Hope Christian High School, she garnered All-New Mexico First Team honors as a senior in 2020-21 after previously being named All-State Second Team as a junior. She competed on the club circuit with the New Mexico Clippers.

Navy vs. Georgetown
The Mids and Hoyas have met 11 times on the hardwood in a series that dates back to Feb. 4, 1978 ... All-time, Georgetown holds a 9-2 advantage in the series with Navy ... Tuesday night's contest is the first in the series since Nov. 20, 2007 when the Hoyas defeated the Mids, 81-56 in Washington, D.C. ... The Mids' victories came in that initial game by a 82-80 score in double overtime and later on Dec. 4, 1987 at the Princeton Invitational with a three-point, 67-64 win ... The teams have played six times in Annapolis; Navy is 1-5 all-time ... Georgetown is currently on a six-game winning streak against Navy.
