ANNAPOLIS, Md. – No. 15 Navy (3-9, 1-7 GARC) finished off its regular-season slate on Saturday after racking up 4,656 points against No. 9 Memphis (1-6, 1-3 GARC) where the Tigers won the virtual contest after totaling 4,693 points.
Â
Senior captain
Torrance Kang (Columbia, Md.) led the Midshipmen after compiling a season-high 1,172 overall. Kang also set season-highs in smallbore (581) and air rifle (591) as she just missed her aggregate career-high by three points.
Â
"We had a good performance today overall," head coach
Mike Anti commented after the match. "The final score may not indicate that, but we had a number of our younger athletes increase their personal bests and continue to improve. This shows a lot of promise for the coming years. We have sustained a few injuries recently from our more experienced athletes, which has contributed to our lower score, but hopefully, they will be 100 percent by the qualifier next week."
Â
Kang's 581 in smallbore paced the Midshipmen on Saturday and
Michael Zanti (Jr., Norfolk, Va.) was a point back with a 580.
Brianna Feerick (Jr., Pembroke, Mass.) fired a 571 and
Gabriella Mayes (Jr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) contributed a 569 for Navy's team total of 2,301 points in smallbore. As a non-starter,
Luke Knollinger (Sr., Valley Grove, W. Va.) shot the Midshipmen's third-best score in smallbore and
Mason MacKenzie (So., Henderson, Md.) set a career-high in the discipline with a 573.
Â
In air rifle, Kang once again paced the team after scoring 591 points in the event. The junior pair of Mayes and Zanti tallied matching 589s to help lead the Midshipmen to a score of 2,355 points in air rifle. After a career day last weekend,
Clarissa Layland (Fr., Granbury, Texas) recorded the final counting score for Navy with 586 points.
Laurel Kuhne (Jr., Everett, Pa.) – Navy's final starter in the lineup – was just two points shy of her career-best in air rifle with 585 points on Saturday.
Â
As a team, Navy had 10 individuals score at least 580 points in air rifle. Knollinger led the non-starters with 587 points, while
Mark Dely (Fr., Fort Wayne, Ind.), Feerick,
Deonte Hayes (Fr., Fort Mill, S.C.), MacKenzie and
Will Wilkins (So., Lemoore, Calif.) all reached career marks in air rifle with scores of 572, 582, 583, 581 and 583, respectively.
