ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's tennis (1-0) is in the middle of its five-match homestand to open the season where the Midshipmen are slated to host Towson (1-2) at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. No fans are allowed to attend the competition.
After a 345-day layoff from competition, Navy returned to action last weekend and upended George Washington in a 5-2 contest in Annapolis. The Midshipmen rolled in all three doubles matches as they only dropped two games throughout and swept the doubles point. In singles, Navy picked up four straight-set victories to seal the season-opening victory.
During the opening match,
Meghana Komarraju,
Miranda Deng,
Katreina Corpuz and
Samantha Johns finished the day going 2-0 with victories in both doubles and singles competition. Deng's weekend earned her Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
Navy's returning trio who started the season with two wins all rank in the top-10 in the program's record book in winning percentage in both singles and doubles. In singles, Corpuz has a .762 mark (third), Deng has a .727 winning percentage (fifth) and Komarraju's .717 mark is eighth overall. In doubles, Corpuz ranks second with a .762 mark, while Komarraju has a .738 winning percentage (fourth) and Deng has a .727 winning percentage to rank seventh.
Jillian Taggart – who partnered with Deng at No. 1 doubles last week – leads the program record book in doubles winning percentage with a .783 mark.
Towson comes into the weekend with a record of 1-2 overall. After dropping two matches to start the year against James Madison (7-0) and Liberty (6-1), the Tigers won their last match over Delaware State. Towson also has a busy weekend with contests at Radford on Friday and at Longwood on Saturday before traveling to Annapolis on Sunday. Themis Halious is the lone multi-match winner in singles competition with a record of 2-1 while five other Tigers have one win through three matches. In doubles, six different players and three doubles teams have all picked up one victory this spring.
Navy is a perfect 9-0 against Towson in the all-time series and the two programs last met in 2019, where Navy won a 6-1 decision at home. The Midshipmen won the doubles point with two victories and then earned four straight-set singles wins to secure the win.
After Sunday's match, Navy hosts Temple on Saturday, March 6 from the Tose Family Tennis Center.
