Senior co-captain
Christian Daniel (Sr / Owings, Md.) has been named the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week following his six-point performance in Navy's 14-12 victory over 15th-ranked Loyola Saturday at Ridley Athletic Complex. In addition to Daniel, the conference also recognized Army's Doug Jones (defense) and Wyatt Schupler (goalkeeper), Lehigh's Mike Sisselberger (faceoff) and Lafayette's Peter Lehman (rookie) as players of the week at their respective positions.
This is the second time in Daniel's career that he has been recognized as the league's offensive player of the week, earning the award in 2019 after leading the Mids to a come-from-behind victory in their season finale against Boston U. where he produced a career-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Meanwhile, Daniel is the fifth different Navy player to earn weekly honors from the conference this spring, joining first-time winners
Nick Franchuk (defense on Feb. 22),
Jacob Jarosz (faceoff on March 1),
Jon Jarosz (rookie on March 1) and
Spencer Rees (goalkeeper on March 29).
Daniel, who eclipsed the 100-point mark for his career the first time Navy met Loyola (April 3), contributed a career-high five assists, including three in the opening quarter as Navy built a 7-1 lead. All three of those assists were fed to
Jack Sweeney (Jr / Glenelg, Md.) on set extra-man plays. Daniel also dealt out a pair of assists to
Jon Jarosz in the second and third quarters.
Daniel's poise and leadership were on display in the closing minutes of the game where with under two minutes to go, he split the double team coming out of a timeout and bounced his shot past a third defender into the open goal to give the Mids a two-goal advantage.
The six-point afternoon propelled Daniel atop Navy's season leader board in points (22), goals (12) and assists (10-tied).
Navy returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to one of the greatest rivalries in college sports, the Army-Navy Game. CBS Sports Network will broadcast the game with faceoff set for 12:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game will also be carried live by 1430 FM / 99.9 AM WNAV with Pete Medhurst and
Joe Miller on the call. Daniel, along with Navy's other 16 senior team members (15 players, 2 student support staff), will be honored prior to the game in what will be the final home game of their careers.
