WEST POINT, N.Y. – Navy women's tennis (5-3, 3-2 Patriot League) capped off its regular season with a 6-1 defeat against Boston University (7-1, 3-0 Patriot League) in a neutral-site match in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.
"Today was a good match for us to learn from," head coach
Keith Puryear said. "In doubles, BU came out much faster than we did, and our adjustment came too late. In singles, we created opportunities, but we must be able to capitalize when the opportunity is there to do so. After the match, we were able to talk and identify areas of improvement individually and for us as a team."
The Terriers came out of the gate quickly and swept the doubles matches over the Midshipmen. At No. 2 doubles, Victoria Carlsten and Erica Di Battista earned a 6-2 victory over
Miranda Deng (Sr., North Potomac, Md.) and
Tina Li (Sr., Wexford, Pa.). Boston clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-1 win from Kaitlin Tan and Shelly Yaloz against
Samantha Johns (Fr., Simpsonville, S.C.) and
Kacey Moore (Jr., Wellington, Fla.). At the final doubles contest,
Katreina Corpuz (Jr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and
Meghana Komarraju (Jr., Vienna, Va.) suffered a 6-3 setback against Lily Burchell and Emily Kim at No. 1 doubles.
To start singles, the Terriers kept their momentum and grabbed a 2-0 lead after Di Battista picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Deng at No. 3 singles. Then at the No. 4 spot, Corpuz dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Kim and Boston clinched the win at No. 2 after Tan edged out Komarraju, 7-5, 6-4.
At No. 1 singles, Moore lost a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 contest to Carlsten and Burchell outlasted Johns at No. 5, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
Stella Ribaudo (Fr., Chicago, Ill.) won the Midshipmen's lone match of the afternoon after beating Yaloz at No. 6 singles, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8), to keep Navy unbeaten at the No. 6 spot. However, the Terriers walked away with a 6-1 victory.
In exhibition matches, Ribaudo teamed up with
Casey Accola (So., Winter Garden, Fla.) to win a 6-0 decision over Dani Blaser and Mia Wallace. Then in singles play, Steph Nguyen earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Accola.
Corinne Farid (Fr., Columbia, Mo.) was upended by Alex Angyalosy, 6-3, 6-4, and Li won a set against Wallace but lost 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 1-0 (10-4).
