SPRINGFIELD, Pa. —
David Miccoli (Jr / Ludlow, Mass.) shot a team-low 3-over par 73 to lead the Navy men's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the one-day, 18-hole Rolling Green Intercollegiate held in Springfield, Pa. at the Rolling Green Golf Club (par 70 / 6,900 yds). Navy's six-player team (top four scores count) covered the Will Flynn-designed course with a 17-over par 297.
Rhode Island placed three golfers inside of the top 10, including a pair in the top five, to pace the 13-team field with 5-over par 285 and win the team title. Bucknell and Monmouth tied for second, each shooting a 287 (+7), while Lafayette, Saint Joseph's and Villanova tied for fourth with a 13-over par 293. Monmouth's Erik Stevens took individual medalist honors with a 2-under par 68, while Villanova's Noah Peck was just a stroke behind in second with a 69 (-1).
Saturday marked the first time in Miccoli's career that he has shot the Mids' low score in a tournament. Also representing the Navy Blue squad were
Ward Wilkinson (Sr / Ashland, Va.), who tied for 25th with a 4-over par 74, while
Charlie Musto (Sr / Sterling, Va.),
Chad Deegan (Jr / Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Will Meshad (So / Atlanta, Ga.) tied for 34th with a 5-over par 75.
Keegan Shreves (So / Potomac, Md.) rounded out the team with a 7-over par 77.
Leading the way for the 13-place Navy Gold squad was
Ben Burton (Jr / Charleston, S.C.), who had the shot of the day with an eagle on the seventh hole. Like his classmate,
David Miccoli, he turned in a 3-over par 73.
Braxton Tracy (So / Huntersville, N.C.) finished 49th with a 7-over par 77, followed by
Reece Massei (Fr / Warrenton, Va.) in 61st (79, +9),
Michael Brennan (Sr / Locust Valley, N.Y.) and
Jake Miles (Sr / Fredericksburg, Va.) in 67th (80, +10) and
Ashton Lee in 76th (87, +17).
The Midshipmen will be back in action next weekend when they play host to the four-team (Navy Blue, Navy Gold, Howard, George Washington) Match Play By the Bay. The one-day, 36-hole event will be held Friday at the newly-restored Naval Academy Golf Course beginning at 8:00 am. On Saturday, Navy will play host to Richmond in dual action and will feature nine players for each team. Action is tentatively set for 11:00 am.
