BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior captain
Jared Leins (Raleigh, N.C.) and junior
Zach Stevens (Lexington, Mass.) represented the Navy baseball program on the 12-player Academic All-Patriot League Team the league office announced on Friday afternoon.
This is the second Academic All-Patriot League selection for Leins after he earned the honor in 2019 and Stevens earns his first recognition.
Stevens – who was selected to the Second Team All-Patriot League earlier this week – enters the postseason with a .324 batting average and he leads the team with a .546 slugging percentage. In league games, the junior posted a .607 slugging percentage, which leads the Patriot League. Stevens is also second on the team and ranks in the top 10 in the league in RBIs with 27 while his 24 runs lead the Midshipmen and 35 hits are second.
In the classroom, Stevens has a 3.82 grade-point average as an operations research major. He has also been named the Naval Academy's Superintendent's List once, Commandant's List three times and Dean's List once. Following his freshman and sophomore seasons, Stevens was also named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll while also being selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree in 2020.
Leins has compiled a 1.62 ERA in his six appearances and four starts for the Midshipmen this spring. He has pitched 16-2/3 innings and struck out 15 batters for Navy during his senior season. Leins also brings in a team-low .140 opponent batting average into the postseason for the Midshipmen. Leins was a Second Team All-Patriot Leaguer in 2018 while being named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team in 2019.
The senior captain is majoring in mechanical engineering and has a 3.88 cumulative grade-point average. Leins is a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient and he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in 2019 and 2020. Last spring, Leins was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team. Leins – who will commission as a Navy pilot after graduation – has been named to the Naval Academy's Superintendent's List three times, Commandant's List seven times and Dean's List four times.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or student-athletes in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
Navy begins its postseason run this weekend with a best-of-three series against Lehigh in the Patriot League Semifinals. The series begins on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon and then the if necessary game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
