Track and Field Completes Sweep of IC4A / ECAC Championships

For the first time in program history, the Navy track and field team has swept the IC4A / ECAC Championships.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – For the first time in program history, the Navy track and field team has swept the IC4A / ECAC Championships, claiming the 2021 outdoor meet which was held in Springfield, Mass. over the weekend. For the men, it was the seventh IC4A outdoor title in program history, and the third consecutive win for the Mids in the meet. The three consecutive IC4A championships matches Navy's stretch of three straight titles in 1944, 1945, and 1946. For the women, it was the second ECAC Outdoor Championship in program history, and the first since 1989 when the Mids claimed the Division II ECAC title.

"It was an amazing weekend," Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook said following the meet. "Coming into the meet, we wanted to increase our spots for Regional, but it is a championship meet that predates the NCAA Tournament so we wanted to also compete well. The men's team won for the third time in a row, matching the mark done in the 40s. The women's team has evolved so much in the last couple of years and came out this weekend and posted a win in a big championship meet. We try to compete in everything we do and we received a ton of compliments on how our student-athletes competed."

"We were undefeated on both the men's and women's side throughout this year. When you get used to competing every day in practice, you are ready for when they keep score. We have gotten people to buy into our culture. It has been extremely difficult with everything involving COVID, but we are getting it done. We had a lot of people compete this weekend and a lot of people did well. It showed as we were able to come away with a pair of wins."

The men finished first among the 32 teams that scored in an event, while the women were first out of 37 teams that scored. Navy men tallied 191 points to finish ahead of Army (119 points), Northeastern (49), Rider (41), and Dartmouth (33.50). The Midshipmen women scored 123.5 total points to win the meet, with Army (88), Saint Francis (67), Richmond (63), and Towson (62) rounding out the top five.

Navy tallied 56 All-East performances with the men's team earning 31 individuals and three relay teams and the women's team earning 25 individuals and three relays. Navy won five events on the men's side, including four individual events and the 4x800m relay, while claiming the 200m dash on the women's side.

Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) was named IC4A Co-Performer of the Meet for his efforts over the weekend. Thompson won the 110m and the 400m hurdles. He posted the second-best time in school history, 13.80, in the 110m hurdles, while clocking the fifth fastest time in the Navy annals, 51.64, to win the 400m hurdles.

On Friday, Jack Haller (Cumming, Ga.) helped get the Midshipmen started on the right foot with a win in the pole vault, notching a height of 5.08m (16-08.00). The decathlon wrapped up on Saturday with Baynes Autrey (Mountain Brook, Ala.) tallying 6,833 points to win the event.

In the 400m dash, Eric Hughey (Lee's Summit, Mo.) won the event with a time of 46.99. The 4x800m relay team of Ian Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.), Alex Rizzo (Bronxville, N.Y.), Sean Casey (Vienna, Va.), and Ashwin Briggs (Pickerington, Ohio) combined for the 10th fastest time in program history, 7:30.33, to claim the victory.

Molly Mangan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) clocked a school-record time of 23.91 to win the 200m dash.

Senior captain Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) joined Mangan with a school record over the weekend, notching a Navy-best distance of 60.67m (199-00) in the hammer throw in competition on Friday.

Navy returns to action in two weeks when the Midshipmen head to the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla. on the campus of the University of North Florida.
