Three Mids Garner All-League Honors, Mids Place Second at Patriot League Men’s Golf Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  // Team captain Charlie Musto (Sr / Sterling, Va.), Keegan Shreves (So / Potomac, Md.) and Nicholas Klock (Jr / Moraga, Calif.) captured All-Patriot League honors in guiding Navy to a second-place finish at the 2021 Patriot League Men's Golf Championship Sunday afternoon held at the Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis. It's the 20th time in the 29 years the Patriot League Championship has been held that Navy has placed either first or second.

"The guys left everything out on the course today," said Navy's Pat Owen, who has led the Mids' program for the last 31 years.  "We knew we needed to go low to catch Loyola, and we did have some early momentum. They responded with a run of their own, and although we moved up the board to catch Lafayette and finish second, we were unable to catch the front runners.

"It was exciting to see Charlie Musto finish tied for third in his final Patriot League Tournament and senior Ward Wilkinson bounced back today with a team-low 72.  I'm also excited for what our future holds with sophomore Keegan Shreves finishing third junior Nicholas Klock finishing ninth. Everyone on our roster had at least one round that counted for our team score which is a testament to Navy's depth. With just two starters graduating and some terrific newcomers slated to join us in the fall, we really look forward to next year's championship!"

Loyola held a 10-stroke advantage over Lafayette heading into the final round and an 11-point lead over the Mids after covering the 36 holes with a 16-over 576. The Greyhounds went on to shoot the low round on Sunday and win the Patriot League title with a 26-over par 866 (288-288-290). It marked Loyola's fourth championship  (2014-2015-2017-2021) since joining the league in 2014.

Navy turned in the second-lowest round of the day (along with Colgate) to overcome a 2-stroke deficit and edge Lafayette for second. The Mids shot a 44-over par 884 (300-287-297), while the Leopards finished third with a 45-over par 885 (292-293-300). Bucknell took fourth with a 915 (300-311-304), followed by Army (310-302-307=919), Lehigh (313-308-300=921), Colgate (318-309-297=924) and Holy Cross (323-313-318=954).

Musto and Shreves garnered First-Team All-Patriot League recognition after tying for third place to pace the Mids. Musto, who began his career at Navy by earning individual medalist and rookie of the year honors at the 2018 Patriot League Championship, closed out his career by once again earning first-team honors with a an 11-over par 221 (77-70-74). Shreves, meanwhile, pushed up in the final standings after opening the final round in fifth. He, too, shot an 11-over par 221 (74-72-75) to earn all-league kudos in his first appearance in the conference championship.

Klock secured Second-Team All-Patriot League recognition after completing the 54-hole tournament in a ninth place tied with Lafayette's Ryan Tall, posting a 13-over par 223 (75-72-76).

It's the first time Navy has placed three players on the All-Patriot League Teams since 2013 when Chris House (1st), August Jonas (T6th) and Drew Selby (9th) placed among the top 10 for the Mids. It's also the second time in the last three Patriot League Championships that Navy has had two golfers finish in the top five. In 2018, Musto was the individual medalist, while Griffin Peters finished fourth.

Finishing in 17th place was Ward Wilkinson (Sr / Ashland, Va.), who saved he best round for his final round as a collegiate player. The four-year letter winner totaled an 18-over par 228 with rounds of 76, 80 and 72.

Chad Deegan (Jr / Newport Beach, Calif.), who earned Second-Team All-Patriot League honors in 2019, tied for 21st with a 20-over par 230 (75-77-78), while David Miccoli (Jr / Ludlow, Mass.) tied for 24th with a 23-over par 233 (83-73-77).

Loyola's Brandon Berry held off teammate Evan Brown to earn Patriot League Player of the Year honors, turning in a 1-over par 211 (69-70-72). Meanwhile, Colgate's Dugan McCabe placed 18th with a 19-over par 229 (77-80-72) to grab Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors as the highest finishing freshman in the field. Loyola's Chris Baloga was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.
