Water Polo Hits the Road for Princeton Invitational

The Midshipmen will play three games during the tournament.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy water polo team travels for the first time this season as the Midshipmen head north for the annual Princeton Invitational at DuNuzio Pool in Princeton, N.J. The Midshipmen will play Brown, No. 3 Stanford, and Iona during the tournament.
 
The Mids open the tournament at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday against Brown, before concluding the day (8:30 p.m.) against No. 3 Stanford. Navy closes out competition in the Princeton Invite on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Iona.
 
PRINCETON COVID-19 POLICY
Fans who wish to attend athletic events at Princeton will be required to follow the below protocols. These policies also apply to working members of the media covering events at Princeton. This policy is subject to change.
 
Indoor Athletic Events:
– The University's current visitor policy (found here) states that all visitors attending an indoor University-sponsored event, public performance, varsity and athletics event, and religious service must be vaccinated with no exceptions. Please note that per this current University policy, children under 12 years of age may not enter any campus buildings or attend any indoor events at this time.
– Masking that covers the mouth and nose is required at all times regardless of vaccination status.
– Social distancing is recommended, when possible. Parties that arrive together can sit together.
– Hand sanitizer stations available inside the facilities.
**Fully Vaccinated is defined as two weeks after the second dose of a two-dose vaccine or two weeks after the single-dose vaccine**

Scouting the Midshipmen
The Midshipmen began competition for the 2021 season, going 2-2 at the annual Navy Open. The Mids dropped a pair of games to No. 3 Cal (L, 18-7) and No. 9 UC Davis (L, 19-8), but posted solid victories over Salem (W, 16-6) and Iona (W, 16-4).
 
Offensively, Navy had 22 different players register points at the Navy Open, including 19 who scored at least one goal. The Mids were led by Jake Altmayer (Pasadena, Calif.), Isaac Salinas (Spring City, Pa.), and Ivan Pang (El Monte, Calif.). Altmayer paced all Midshipmen with 10 points during the opening weekend, tallying a team-high five goals and five assists. Salinas joined Altmayer with five goals of his own, while notching three helpers for eight total points. Pang finished the weekend with seven points on four goals and three assists.
 
Defensively, all four goalies saw action at the Navy Open. Caden Capobianco (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Max Sandberg (Newport Beach, Calif.) saw a majority of the action. Capobianco finished the weekend with a team-high 22 saves, while Sandberg followed with 17 stops.
 
Scouting the Opposition
Brown enters the weekend 5-1 overall. After dropping a game to Santa Clara, the Bears closed out the Bruno Classic with wins against Austin College, Wagner, Mercyhurst, Florida, and Gannon.
 
Stanford, who heads to the tournament ranked third in the country, opened the year 3-0, including a pair of wins at the Pacific Invite. The Cardinal defeated No. 12 San Jose State and No. 7 Pacific at the Pacific Invite before defeating No. 15 Santa Clara during a midweek game. Stanford takes on St. Francis Brooklyn and No. 12 Princeton before taking on Navy.
 
Iona took part in the Navy Open to start the 2021 campaign. The Gaels finished the weekend 1-3, defeating Mount St. Mary's and dropping contests to George Washington, Bucknell, and Navy. Iona squares off against Johns Hopkins and Wanger before closing out the Princeton Invitational against the Midshipmen.
