ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After winning three flights at the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational last time out, the Navy women's tennis team will return to action this weekend as it travels to take part in the Elon Invitational (Sept. 17-19) and the Milwaukee Tennis Classic (Sept. 18-20).
LAST TIME OUT
Navy opened its 2021 fall slate by winning three flights at the aforementioned Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational hosted at the Brigade Sports Complex last weekend.
Jillian Taggart (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) led the way for the Midshipmen, posting a perfect 4-0 record in the competition's singles A flight.
In her first collegiate action,
Sylvia Eklund (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) also went 4-0 in singles competition, participating in the D flight. The final victory of the invitational for the Mids came in the B flight of doubles competition with the pairing of
Samantha Johns (So., Simpsonville, S.C.) and
Kacey Moore (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) picking up the win.
Rounding out the top performers in singles competition for Navy over the weekend was the trio of
Casey Accola (Jr., Winter Garden, Fla.), team captain
Meghana Komarraju (Sr., Vienna, Va.) and Paravathi Shanker (Fr., Napa, Calif.), all of whom tallied two victories over the three days of competition.
MTC BREAKDOWN
Moore and Taggart will represent Navy at the prestigious Milwaukee Tennis Classic hosted in Milwaukee, Wis. The MTC will feature a 32-player draw for singles and a 16-team draw in doubles, the women's draw will take place on a hard-court surface at the Western Raquet Club.
The Navy duo of Moore and Taggart will be competing in the MTC for the first time in their respective careers and will be part of both the singles and doubles competition.
The MTC is the longest running tennis tournament in the country outside of the NCAA Tournament. The winners of the men's and women's singles draws at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic receive a wild card berth into the main draw of the ITA Fall National Championship.
ELON INVITATIONAL BREAKDOWN
The remainder of the Navy roster will take part in the Elon Invitational hosted in Elon, N.C. The three-day invitational will take place at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with play beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
The tournament will feature three singles and three doubles flights with eight teams participating including East Carolina, Elon, Kennesaw State, North Carolina Central, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Greensboro who will join Navy in the field.
