ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (2-0, 1-0 CSFL-South) registered a dominating 52-0 victory over Collegiate Sprint Football League South Division rival Chestnut Hill (1-1, 1-1 CSFL-South) on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Mids tallied seven touchdowns and a field goal, while holding the Griffins scoreless for their first shutout since Nov. 1, 2019.
"We were proficient in all three phases of the game tonight,"
Major Alfonso Meidus, USMC said. "Our defense set the tone early and we were really able to get our ground game going. As normal, we will take a look at the film and make corrections heading into next week. We need to work on our discipline and get better from a penalty perspective."
Offensively, Navy recorded 527 yards of total offense on 347 rushing yards and 180 yards through the air.
Matthew McGee (Port Charlotte, Fla.) and
Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) led the team with 161 and 80 rushing yards, respectively. The duo each notched a pair of rushing scores.
Brandon Atwood (Gentry, Ark.) led the passing attack, finishing 7-for-9 for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while
William Leong (Irvine, Calif.) finished 4-for-5 for 63 yards and a TD.
Andrew Margiotta (Vienna, Va.) led the team with 80 yards on three receptions including a pair of touchdowns.
Jackson Suddath (Houston, Texas) pulled down a 47-yard touchdown reception for the longest catch of the day.
Defensively, the Midshipmen held the Griffins to 129 yards of total offense. The Mids limited the visitors to just 31 yards on the ground and 98 yards through the air.
Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) led the way for Navy, registering a team-best seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack, while
Dante Carrasco (Germantown, Tenn.) chipped in five stops, including a tackle for loss.
Adam Weissenfels (Richland, Wash.) and
Jack Costigan (Middletown, N.J.) each forced fumbles in the game with
Mike Garnett (Dallas, Texas) and
Ed Shead (South Hampton, Pa.) recovering fumbles.
Kicker
Mychal Golden (Jonesboro, Ark.) continued his hot start to the season, converting seven PAT attempts and drilling a 31-yard field goal to finish with 10 points in the game.
Navy jumped out to an early lead, as Totta capped a seven-play drive with a four-yard plunge into the end zone. Margiotta pushed the lead to 14-0 with an 11-yard TD reception with 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Midshipmen erupted for four touchdowns in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 42-0 at the half. McGee registered TD rushes of 35 and 24 yards in the second quarter, while Margiotta pulled down a 36-yard scoring catch. Totta capped the scoring with a two-yard plunge with 90 seconds remaining in the half.
In the second half, the Midshipmen were able to dive into the depth chart, getting nearly everyone on the roster into the game. The defense was able to hold the Griffins scoreless, while the offense used a 47-yard Suddath TD reception and a Golden field goal to provide the final score of 52-0.
Navy returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 2, as the Midshipmen travel to West Point, N.Y. for the annual Star Game, which is part of the overall Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. The game will be live streamed and live stats will be available throughout the game.
