Navy and Colgate to Meet in Kid's Day Game on Wednesday AM in Hamilton

Mids and Raiders to tip-off at 11:00 AM

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Early season Patriot League action continues for the Navy women's basketball team on Wednesday as the Mids face off with the Colgate Raiders in a special Kid's Day Classic game with an 11 a.m. tip in Hamilton, N.Y. After collecting a road win at Bucknell last Wednesday, the Mids (4-10, 1-3 PL) will be looking to tally their second straight win away from Annapolis against a Raider (2-13, 0-4 PL) team that they have had defeated six of the last seven times they played at Cotterell Court on the campus of Colgate. These two programs did not meet in 2020-21 due to the COVID-impacted regional-heavy schedule that the Patriot League implemented last year. The early morning action will be streamed live on ESPN+.

ESPN+ is a subscription-based streaming service that requires patrons to sign-up for monthly or yearly plans prior to tuning into the contest.

Looking Back at Navy-Colgate ...  February 8, 2020 in Annapolis
Navy found itself in a physical 40-minute contest with Colgate on Saturday afternoon in Annapolis. Taking on the highest scoring team in the Patriot League the Mids trailed by 20 at the half before outscoring the Raiders by 11 in the third quarter to get right back into the thick of the game. The Mids continued showing the fighting spirit in the fourth quarter, but that substantial halftime lead was too much to overcame as the visitors walked off the court at Alumni Hall with a 65-53 victory.

Navy was led by a well-rounded offensive effort as four players recorded 10 or more points, the first time all season that four Mids had posted totals in double figures. Mary Kate Ulasewicz ('20) had a team-high 12 points, while Montana Braxton ('20) had career-bests with 11 points and nine rebounds. Both Lindsay Llewellyn ('23) and Sophie Gatzounas ('21) finished with 10 points. Gatzounas added to her line with nine rebounds.

Leading 17-12 after one quarter of play, Colgate continued holding Navy's offense at bay for the first 2:33 of the second quarter until Braxton fought through the lane for an offensive rebound and quick putback to make it a 19-14 game in favor of the Raiders. After Colgate expanded its lead out to 13 points, 27-14, Braxton earned another physical basket at 4:59. Ulasewicz made it two consecutive field goals for Navy and it was a 29-18 game with 4:21 left in the quarter. Unfortunately for the Mids they were stricken with another long scoreless drought as the Raiders netted the final nine points of the quarter.

Coming out of the halftime intermission down 38-18, Navy scored the first five points of the third quarter, all coming from Llewellyn in a matter of 1:44. The teams alternated field goals for the next four minutes with Colgate taking a lead of 17 only to see Navy come right back and cut its deficit to 15. The Mids' offense continued clicking in the second half of the quarter. With the score 44-29 and 4:41 remaining in the period, Navy tallied 11 more points. During this final run of play, Colgate only netted five points to make it a 49-40 game through the conclusion of the third quarter. Navy shot 64.3 percent (9-14) from the field and 80.0 percent (4-5) from the foul line as the Mids outscored the Raiders, 22-11 in the stanza.

Navy tried valiantly to keep shaving points off its deficit as the fourth quarter opened with the Mids scoring five of the first nine points to trail by just eight, 53-45. Llewellyn put the exclamation mark on this small run with a three-pointer at 8:17. This would be as close as Navy would get for the rest of regulation as Colgate built its lead back out to double digits on the next possession. While the Mids found some success on offense, the Raiders always had an answer down the stretch as they held on for the 65-53 victory.

For the game, Colgate outshot Navy, 37.7 percent (23-61) to 33.9 (21-62) from the field and 33.3 percent (5-15) to 5.6 (1-18) from three-point range. The Mids were successful from the foul line at an 83.3 percent (10-12) clip versus a 77.8 (14-18) mark for the Raiders.

Bolstered by 18 combined rebounds from Braxton and Gatzounas, Navy won the rebounding battle on Saturday, 43-38. Both Midshipmen finished with nine boards. The Mids also corralled 16 offensive rebounds during the contest.

Last Time Out: Lafayette at Navy, Saturday, January 8
One game after grinding out an exciting two-point victory over Bucknell, Navy was unable to recreate that same performance on Saturday afternoon and fell to Lafayette by a score of 54-44. After overcoming a nine-point deficit early in the second quarter with a 15-2 run to take a 24-20 lead before halftime, the Mids struggled after the break and were outscored by the Leopards 34-20 in the second half.

Jennifer Coleman was a bright spot for Navy on Saturday as the senior guard became the 22nd player in the history of Navy women's basketball to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Playing in her 67th career game, she tied Connie James (Class of '90) for the fifth fastest trek to the 1,000-point club. Coleman hit the milestone with a layup at 4:38 of the fourth quarter. Additional individual highlights on Saturday included Mimi Schrader's nine points on three-of-three shooting off the bench and Ciera Hertelendy's team-high eight rebounds.

The action on Saturday was controlled early by the visitors as Lafayette opened on a 6-0 run as the Leopards registered points on each of their first three possessions. After the teams traded baskets over the next two minutes, Navy ran off seven unanswered points between 7:10 and 5:33, starting with a Kristina Donza three-pointer and ending with a Lindsay Llewellyn pull-up. From that juncture with the Mids up 9-8, the hosts were plagued with turnover problems and didn't score for the remainder of the quarter. Forcing Navy into eight turnovers, Lafayette was able to scrap its way back into the lead slowly with six points over the final 2:30 of the period.

Down 14-9 after one quarter of play, the Mids saw their deficit grow to a then- game-high nine points as the Leopards scored on two of their first three times down the court in the second quarter. After Taylor took a timeout to gather his team, Navy came out refocused and locked in for the task at hand. The Mids overwhelmed the Leopards in all facets of the game as the visitors scored just two points over the final 8:50 of the quarter, a Makayla Andrews layup at 3:48. That defensive effort spurned Navy's offense as the Mids countered with 15 points. Navy's well-balanced attack in the second quarter saw five different players score led by Coleman's six points. Down 20-19 with less than two minutes left in the quarter, Schrader flipped the score in Navy's favor with a dynamic drive to the hoop and 'and-one' conversion at 1:56. Morganne Andrews closed out the scoring in the quarter with a successful jump shot in Navy's next possession.

With the score 24-20 at the intermission, Lafayette started the second half similar to the first half with an 8-2 run over the first 2:05. Down 28-26, Sydne Watts drew Navy even with a lengthy jumper following a Coleman offensive rebound at 6:09. Over the next four minutes both teams recorded just one basket a Coleman layup at 5:35 and a Jessica Booth jumper at 2:43 for Lafayette. Tied at 30-30 and less than two minutes remaining, the Mids and Leopards matched each other with five points each down the stretch.

The many changing faces of the game, a Lafayette lead after one quarter, a Navy lead after two quarters and a tie after three quarters led the home fans at Alumni Hall to hope for an exciting conclusion. Unfortunately, the final 10 minutes of action saw the teams combine to shoot 28.0 percent (7-25) from the field and a large disparity at the foul line make the difference. The Leopards were slowly able to break into the lead as they scored seven of the quarter's first nine points over the opening 2:18. With the score 42-37 in Lafayette's favor, the scoring dried up for the next three-plus minutes as the Leopards added just one foul shot, while the Mids' effort consisted of two Coleman free throw makes. Needing 14 points coming into the game to reach the 1,000-point plateau, Coleman reached the milestone with a driving layup at 4:38 to make it a two-point game, 43-41. A 9-0 run by Lafayette over the next 3:10 gave the visitors an insurmountable 11-point lead as it held on for the 54-44 victory.

For the game, Lafayette outshot Navy, 32.3 percent (20-62) to 31.0 (18-58) from the field and 92.3 percent (12-13) to 85.7 (6-7) from the free throw line. Neither team had much success from three-point range as the Mids held a nominal 14.3 percent (2-14) to 13.3 (2-15) advantage.

In the battle on the glass, the Leopards grabbed 14 more boards than the Mids, 49-35 with a 21-13 edge in offensive rebounds. A direct result of those offensive rebounds was 18 second-chance points for Lafayette versus eight for Navy. Hertelendy grabbed a team-high eight caroms for the Mids.
