DANBURY, Conn. - After leading the Navy gymnastics team to a hard-fought second-place finish at the 2022 Navy Open this past Saturday, the duo of
Ronan McQuillan (So., Katy, Texas) and
Isaiah Drake (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) were recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference as the league's Specialist and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
McQuillan was a standout this weekend on the pommel horse as he placed first on the apparatus at the 2022 Navy Open courtesy of his 13.35 score. Taking on a field of 25 gymnasts from Penn State, Navy, William & Mary, Springfield and Temple, he finished first by 0.15 points over Penn State's Chase Clingman. Through two weeks of action the sophomore currently leads the ECAC in scoring average on the pommel horse with a 13.25 and ranks 14th overall in the nation.
Drake continued the fast start to his collegiate career as he recorded three top-two results at Saturday's Navy Open. Drake's floor exercise performance took top-billing as he won the event with a 13.85 score, that cleared the field by 0.15 points. His high-scoring efforts continued on the high bar where he netted a 13.25 that placed him second overall. On the strength of those two scores, plus sixth-place finishes on the pommel horse (12.45) and rings (13.25), Drake finished first in the all-around competition. Testing himself in all six events for the first time in his young career, Drake tallied 77.7 points that bested his nearest competitor, Penn State's Ethan Dick by 1.6 points. Nationally, that single all-around performance is the eighth-highest scoring result in the NCAA this season. The freshman has now claimed the ECAC Rookie of the Week award in each of his first two weeks of collegiate action.
Navy will continue early-season action with another home meet as the Mids will welcome the Tribe of William & Mary for a one-on-one showdown on Saturday. First touch between the Mids and Tribe is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Halsey Field House.
