HAMILTON, N.Y. -- One week after the Navy volleyball team ended Colgate's 11-match winning streak, the Raiders (16-4, 8-1) stopped a six-match winning streak by the Mids (10-8, 7-2) by earning a 25-16, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22 victory Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.
The teams entered the day tied atop the Patriot League standings.
"Colgate played a very clean and efficient match," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador. "In most matches, siding out at a 61-percent rate gives you a very good chance at winning, but Colgate played a level above today (72% sideout rate)."
Set One
The Raiders held a slim 14-12 lead when they scored 11 of the next 15 points to take the opening set.
Colgate held a 13-9 edge in kills in the set.
Set Two
Navy took a lead of as many as four points in the first half of the second set (13-9), but found itself trailing, 20-18 and 21-19.
Jamie Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.) posted a kill, then a block by
Maggie Bodman (Jr., Northbrook, Ill.) and
Averi Miller (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) tied the stanza at 21-21. Llewellyn made it three-straight points for the Mids with a kill. That was followed by three-straight sideouts to make the score 23-23.
Bodman registered a kill to break the tie and give Navy the chance to serve for the set. Colgate erased that chance on a kill, but immediately gave the Mids another opportunity with a service error. Navy converted on this chance when
Katie Jackowski (So., Saint John, Ind.) posted a kill.
Llewellyn totaled six kills and one error on 12 attempts (.417) in the set as the Mids outhit the Raiders, .417-.400.
Set Three
The Raiders never trailed in the set and quickly took leads of 5-1, 14-8 and 18-9. Navy was able to winnow the margin down to three points at 22-19 and 23-20, but couldn't pull any closer.
Colgate hit a lofty .484 in the frame and limited Navy to a mark of .250.
Set Four
Colgate seemingly was running away with the set, only to see Navy climb right back into it. The Raiders first took the lead at 5-4 and eventually built a 19-14 cushion. Back came the Mids and a service ace by
Hannah Hoover (So., Katy, Texas) closed the gap down to one point at 20-19. It would also be a one-point difference at 22-21 and 23-22, but back-to-back Colgate kills gave the Raiders the set and the match.
Navy had four more kills than Colgate in the set, 14-10, but also had five more attack errors, 7-2.
Statistical Summary
Most statistics between the teams were similar. Both had 54 kills, 47 assists and four aces. Navy also had one fewer service error (10-9) and six more digs (43-37). The two differences came in hitting errors and blocks as Navy had 21 attack errors and five blocks and Colgate tallied 10 attack errors and nine blocks. That allowed the Raiders to hold a .383-.264 advantage in hitting percentage.
Jamie Llewellyn and
Jordan Llewellyn (Jr., Port Deposit, Md.) each had 14 kills in the match, with Bodman adding 10 kills and three blocks.
Averi Miller, who entered the match leading the league in assists per set, dished out 43 helpers and added four kills. Hoover finished with 13 digs and two aces.
"I can't say enough about
Doris Nelson (So., Long Beach, Calif.) and
Katie Jackowski," said Labrador. "Both have really stepped up and made big impacts (Nelson had six kills in three sets and Jackowski hit .375).
"We have some great notes to add into practice this week to continue growing and prepare for our next two matches."
