ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Powered by three touchdowns by senior offensive team captain
Alex Totta (Kansas City, Kan.), the Navy sprint football team (5-0, 2-0) posted a 42-14 Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) South Division game against Penn (3-3, 2-1) on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. In addition, the Mids' defense picked off a pair of Quaker passes, while also recovering a fumble.
"I am extremely proud of this team," head coach Major Alphonso Meidus, USMC said. "It was a good team win. It was good to be able to support our senior and have a lot of family and friends here tonight. We played a complete game. The offense and defense really complimented each other and special teams had some big plays when we needed it. It is huge to be able to send our seniors off with a win in their final regular season home game on this field."
With the win, the Midshipmen are firmly in the driver seat in the CSFL South Division. With a win against Alderson Broaddus (1-4, 0-1), Navy secures a spot in the 2022 CSFL Championship game.
Offensively, Navy tallied 325 yards of total offense, notching 213 yards on the ground with 112 yards through the air.
Totta led the way on the ground, pounding out 110 rushing yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns.
Brandon Atwood (Gentry, Ark.) added 70 yards on the ground with a rushing TD.
Victor Otero (Action, Mass.) contributed a rushing score.
Atwood led the way passing, finishing the game 12-for-14 for 101 yards and a touchdown. Atwood gave way to
Luke Wagner (Edmond, Okla.) who went 1-for-2 for 11 yards.
Andrew Margiotta (Vienna, Va.) led the way with three receptions, while
Tyron Francis Jr. (Middletown, R.I.) tallied a team-high 45 yards receiving with a touchdown. Totta and
Marco Pezzini (Salinas, Calif.) added two receptions apiece, for 19 and 15 yards, respectively.
Defensively, the Midshipmen registered 74 total tackles, including 7.0 tackles for loss, and a pair of sacks. The Mids picked off a pair of passes, returning the INTs for 54 total yards. In addition, Navy had three pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, and a fumble recovery.
Jack Costigan (Middletown, N.J.) and
Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) finished the game with eight tackles apiece with Kuehler registering a pair of tackles for loss.
Lane Condie (Lovelock, Nev.) added seven stops, while recording the team's first interception of the night, returning it 35 yards to set up Navy's first touchdown.
Devyn Martin (Las Vegas, Nev.),
Major Kent (Dallas, Texas), and
Angelo Labbe (Los Angeles, Calif.) notched six tackles apiece with Martin combining for 1.5 TFLs.
David Niski (Shelton, Conn.) and
Andrew Bailey (Annapolis, Md.) tallied the Mids' two sacks in the game, while
Chris Whiteman (Lehighton, Pa.) contributed the Midshipmen's second interception.
In the first quarter, Navy wasted little time finding the checkerboard end zone. Condie picked off a Penn pass, returning it 35 yards to the 10 yardline. The Mids used three rushes to scratch the scoreboard with Totta capping the drive with a three-yard plunge into the end zone.
Penn responded with a 13-play, 74-yard drive for a touchdown. Linebacker Charles Tauckus caught a 10-yard pass from Andrew Paolini for the touchdown as the Quakers used a little trickeration for the score.
The Mids responded with six-play drive that spanned 68 total yards to regain the lead. The drive was capped by Totta's second TD of the game, a 13-yard rush into the checkerboard end zone to give the home team a 14-7 advantage through one quarter.
The second inning saw Totta register his third touchdown of the night, a two-yard dive to break the plane. Whiteman intercepted a Quaker pass, returning it 19 yard to give Navy a short field. Four plays later, Atwood scampered around the right side for a six-yard touchdown to put the Mids in front 28-7 at the half.
In the second half, Navy used a third-quarter touchdown receptions by Francis to push the advantage to 35-7. Otero added a one-yard plunge into the end zone in the fourth quarter to put the Mids in front 42-7. The Quakers used an 80-yard drive to provide the final margin of 42-14.
Navy returns to action next weekend as the Midshipmen head to Philippi, W.Va. for a CSFL South game against Alderson Broaddus. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Multi-Sport Performance Stadium. Live stats and live video will be available.
