VESTAL, N.Y. – The Navy wrestling team was well represented on the podium at the 13th annual Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open.
Andrew Cerniglia (157-pounds),
Jacob Koser (197-pounds) and
Grady Griess (285-pounds) took home individual championships as Navy ended its second tournament with eight wrestlers placing and five finishing in the top three of their respective weight classes.
Cerniglia repeated as the Bearcat Open's 157-pound champion with a 4-0 record, defeating Alex Hornfeck of West Virginia in the championship bout by a 4-3 decision for his third career tournament title. Koser earned his fourth career tournament championship, using a dominant 12-0 major decision to defeat Penn State's Lucas Cochran in the semifinals, before defeating Austin Cooley of West Virginia by an 11-5 decision in the finals. Griess won his second straight tournament to begin the season and remained undefeated with a 3-0 record. Griess also won his first career match versus an InterMat ranked opponent when he defeated 19th-ranked, Michael Wolfgram of West Virginia, by a 6-4 decision in the semifinals.
Josh Koderhandt (141-pounds) and
David Key (184-pounds) both improved their placements at the Bearcat Open from a year ago as both wrestlers took second place in their respective weight classes. Koderhandt didn't place in the tournament last season but won three matches by fall to advance to the finals before losing to Vince Cornella of Cornell. Key's semifinals match was a thriller, going to tie-breaker 2, but Key took the match over 28th-ranked Anthony Carman of West Virginia by a 7-6 decision. Key won his fourth match over a ranked opponent and placed in his third career tournament.
Freshman
Jacob Lucas (197-pounds) had a big day in Vestal with a fourth-place finish. Lucas defeated Clarion's Brett Wittmann by a 12-3 major decision and Penn State's Levko Higgins by a 7-4 decision for Navy's best placement of the season amongst its freshmen class this season.
