Griess Crowned 285 Pound Champion at Clarion Open

10 of Navy's 19 wrestlers placed in its season opener.

CLARION, PA. – The Navy wrestling team completed its first event of the 2022-23 season at the Clarion Open on Sunday in Clarion, Pa. Navy ended the tournament with 10 of its 19 wrestlers placing, including 285-pound champion Grady Griess. Griess finished the tournament 4-0 after defeating fourth-seeded Hayden Copass of Purdue by a 3-1 decision in the heavyweight final to claim his second collegiate tournament title.

Three other Mids placed in the top three in the tournament. Josh Koderhandt (141) placed second with a 4-1 record, including a victory over third-seeded Seth Koleno of Clarion by a 17-5 major decision. After not placing at the Clarion Open last year, Val Park (165) nearly came away with a tournament crown at a 3-1, placing second in his respective weight class. Park defeated third-seeded Cooper Noehre of Purdue by a 3-0 decision in the semifinals, but lost a close battle in the finals by a 6-4 decision to fifth-seeded Enrique Munguia of Kent State. Team captain Jacob Koser (197) defeated Mason McCready (Bucknell-Unattached) by a 12-1 major decision in the third-place bout to place third in his respective weight class. Koser's third-place finish marks the fifth time he has placed in the top-three in a tournament in his career.

Luke Lucerne (141) fell in the round-of-32 but responded with five straight wins to place fifth for his best tournament finish of his career. Seven freshmen made their debut for Navy and three placed in their first collegiate action. Zach Espalin (125) and Kaemen Smith (149) placed fifth, while Brendan Ferretti (133) placed sixth in his division.

Navy continues tournament action next Sunday when the Mids travel to Vestal, N.Y., to compete in the Bearcat Open hosted by EIWA competitor Binghamton. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Binghamton University Events Center.
