ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Missing out on competing for a valued Star in 2021, all eyes will be on Christl Arena on Saturday morning as the women's basketball teams from Army and Navy will do battle for 2022 season supremacy. Travelling to West Point in the second meeting between the two rivals in three weeks, the Mids (7-15, 4-8 PL) will be looking to replicate their dramatic victory from Jan. 22 in which they won 61-60 on a go-ahead basket with 4.0 seconds left in the game. Besides fighting for the 2022 Star, both Navy and Army (12-10, 6-6 PL) are deep into their respective Patriot League seasons and are currently separated by just two games in the standings with six contests to go before the postseason tournament. CBS Sports Network will be providing live television coverage of that game will tip-off at 11 a.m. from Navy's Alumni Hall with additional radio coverage of the contest available on WNAV. Saturday's Star Game is part of the 2021-22 Star Series presented by USAA.
Navy versus Army
The Mids and Black Knights have met 78 times in a series that began on January 18, 1981Â ... All-time, Navy leads Army, 40-38 ... The Mids have a slight 19-17 edge over the Black Knights in games played at West Point ... Over the last six matchups at Christl Arena, each team has won three games, including a season split last year (COVID procedures in the Patriot League had teams playing weekend doubleheaders often times at the same location) ... The Star was not battled for in 2021 as a positive COVID test within Army's tier 1 cancelled the contest that was due to be played in Annapolis ... Over the last ten matchups, the overall series leans towards the Mids by a 6-4 margin with the Mids winning four straight decisions over the Black Knights during the 2017 and 2018 seasons; the teams have split the last four games, 2-2.

Most Recent Navy-Army Matchup ~ January 22, 2022 in Annapolis
The Navy women's basketball team battled for 40 minutes with service academy bragging rights on the line on Saturday and came away with a dramatic 61-60 victory over Army. Down one with less than 10 seconds to play, the Mids came up with a loose ball following a blocked shot and saw Jennifer Coleman drive the lane before getting the ball to Lindsay Llewellyn for an uncontested 10-foot jumper for the go-ahead basket with four seconds remaining. One last stand by Navy at the buzzer clinched the one-point win over the Black Knights to the enjoyment of the home fans at Alumni Hall.
Close throughout, Saturday's contest, that was viewed nationally on CBS Sports Network, saw the teams swap the lead on 12 different occasions, while tying eight other times. No team had greater than an eight-point lead the entire game.
Jennifer Coleman, Sydne Watts and Lindsay Llewellyn led Navy's offensive effort against Army as the trio combined for 48 points. Coleman netted a game-high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. The senior played a pivotal role in the Mids' second half comeback as she recorded 12 consecutive points in the third quarter to give Navy a three-point lead by the end of the period. Watts was a consistent threat in the second half as well as she netted 10 of her 16 overall points. Llewellyn rounded out the group of leading scorers as she finished with 10 points on five-of-nine shooting.
Coming out for the second quarter with Army ahead 19-14, the visiting Black Knights scored the first three points of the stanza to go up eight. That advantage was the largest of the game for Army as Navy would be in comeback mode for the next 26-plus minutes. An 8-0 run by the Mids between 6:07 and 4:28 quickly evened the score at 22-22. Coleman registered five of those points, including three from the foul line. The final 3:37 of the first half saw the teams battle nearly even as the Black Knights scored five points, while the Mids countered with four. Morganne Andrews was the spark for Navy during this stretch with all four points to go along with four rebounds.
With Army leading 27-26 following 20 minutes of play, Navy quickly jumped back ahead in the third quarter when Mimi Schrader found Andrews for a mid-range jumper at 8:20. The lead bounced between the two sides over the next three possessions as the Black Knights went up 32-30 by the 6:49 juncture. Cleaning up the offensive glass, Llewellyn grabbed the carom and sank a putback layup to knot the game on the following possession. With the score 32-32 at 6:38, Army netted six unanswered points to pull back into the lead. With her team skidding, Coleman ran off an impressive stretch of play as she scored the game's next 12 points, including back-to-back three-pointers at 2:23 and 1:29 to make it 44-38. With less than a minute to go, Watts made her first triple of the game to help Navy hold onto its six-point lead, 47-41. A buzzer-beating three-pointer by Army's Sam McNaughton tightened the score to 47-44 through three quarters of action.
The close back-and-forth play carried over into the fourth as the Black Knights were able to go up 54-51 at 6:01. Watts' keen marksmanship from distance came through on the ensuing possession as Llewellyn found her on the wing for a successful three-pointer to re-tie the game. Each team had an answer for each other as the 54-54 score slowly crept along to a 58-58 score by the 1:34 mark. A made free throw by Coleman gave the host Mids a one-point lead. The Black Knights' leading scorer coming into the game, Alisa Fallon powered her way into the paint 35 seconds later to put Army ahead 60-59. A turnover on the Black Knights' second-to-last possession, set the scene that the 5,000-plus fans at Alumni Hall will not soon forget. With less than 10 seconds to go, Coleman found herself with the ball and shot a contested three-point shot that was blocked by Army's Kate Murray, but a lightning quick reaction by Ciera Hertelendy retrieved the loose ball and immediate found Coleman for a drive towards the hoop. Drawing a late defender that affected her handle, Coleman was able to usher the juggling ball towards a wide-open Llewellyn, who found nothing but the bottom of the net for her baseline jumper with four seconds left to play.
With the score 61-60, the Mids had to withstand one final look by a potent Black Knights' offense. Army put the ball in Fallon's hands and the physical Black Knight guard drove the baseline, but was met by Hertelendy and threw up a wild, desperation shot that missed the hoop by a wide margin.
For the game, Navy outshot Army, 41.4 percent (24-58) to 31.7 (20-63) from the field, while the Black Knights held advantages over the Mids in three-point shooting, 26.1 percent (6-23) to 23.5 (4-17) and from the foul line, 77.8 percent (14-18) to 56.3 (9-16).

Last Time Out: Navy at Lafayette, Wednesday, February 9
A record-setting 22-point, 20-rebound performance by senior standout Jennifer Coleman wasn't enough on Wednesday night as the Navy women's basketball team was tripped up late on the road against Lafayette. Tied 51-51 with 2:35 left in regulation, the host Leopards (8-14, 4-8 PL) closed out the Mids (7-15, 4-8 PL) on a 7-0 run to earn the victory by a score of 58-51 at the Kirby Sports Center.
Coleman entered her name in the single-game record books on Wednesday night as she became the first Midshipmen since Connie James in 1990 to grab 20 or more rebounds and is now one of seven players all-time to reach that figure. In the category of defensive rebounds in a single game, Coleman's 20 defensive boards shattered the previous record of 15 set by James on Jan. 31, 1990 versus Marymount. Offensively, Coleman scored all 14 points for Navy in the first quarter on her way to 22 for the game. Sydne Watts joined her in double-figures as she tallied 12 points in 34 minutes of action.
The action on Wednesday began with the edge going to the host Leopards as they broke out to a 11-4 lead over the first six-plus minutes. A jumper and three-pointer on consecutive possessions by Coleman drew the Mids within two, 11-9 at 3:21. Lafayette responded to Coleman's trey with a three-pointer of its own to go back ahead by five. A 5-2 run to close out the quarter courtesy of a fast break layup and a three-pointer by Coleman tightened it to a 16-14 decision at the end of the first quarter. Coleman was responsible for all 14 of Navy's points as she was 6-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range. Additionally, she had seven rebounds over this stretch.
The second quarter was all Navy as the Mids opened the period on an 8-2 run that was bolstered by three-pointers from Lindsay Llewellyn and Kristina Donza. Ahead 22-18 at 6:23, Navy held Lafayette to just five more points the rest of the period. That staunch defensive effort helped invigorate the Mids' offense as they pulled out to an eight-point advantage of 31-23 going into halftime. Coleman netted 19 of those points to go along with 12 rebounds to record her 17th double-double of the season in just 20 minutes of play.
A three-pointer by Watts on Navy's third possession of the second half gave the visitors their largest lead of the game of 34-23 at the 8:28 mark of the third quarter. Unfortunately for the Mids, that basket by Watts was followed up by just one made field goal for the next 7:58. With Navy's offense in a lull, Lafayette was able to run off an 18-3 streak to pull ahead 41-37 with 58 seconds to go in the third quarter. A late jump shot by Donza with 30 seconds left drew the Mids within two, 41-39 at the end of three quarters of play. As a team, Navy shot just 3-of-16 from the field in the stanza.
Down, but not out, the Mids tied the Leopards less than three minutes into the fourth quarter as Mimi Schrader recorded an individual 5-0 run to even the score at 44-44 by 7:32. A 5-0 rebuttal by Lafayette over the next 85 seconds put the hosts back in front until a 7-2 run by Navy between 4:16 and 2:35 knotted the game once again. Getting out in-transition after a steal and then a long rebound helped the Mids net four easy points before Watts tied the score at 51-51 with a three-pointer from the wing. From that juncture down the stretch, Lafayette scored the final seven points to register the 58-51 win.
For the game, Lafayette outshot Navy, 35.9 percent (23-64) to 33.9 (19-56) from the field, though the Mids outshot the Leopards, 34.8 percent (8-23) to 26.7 (8-30) from three-point range and 62.5 percent (5-8) to 44.4 percent (4-9).
In the rebounding battle, Lafayette grabbed 18 more caroms than Navy with a final tally of 50 versus 32 for the Mids. The Leopards also held a significant 14-to-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Coleman finished with a career-high 20 rebounds, all on the defensive end. Lafayette's Makaila Wilson grabbed 18 rebounds with six on offense and 12 on defense.
Navy had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio on Wednesday night with 11 assists and 10 turnovers. Coleman led the Mids in that category as well with four helpers.
One for the Single-Game Record Books
Coleman had an all-around game for the record books on Feb. 9 at Lafayette as the standout senior guard finished with 22 points and 20 rebounds. She became just the seventh Mid to ever reach the 20-rebound plateau and is one of five players in the history of the program to finish with a 20/20 game ... She's the first since Connie James went for 38 points and 22 rebounds on Jan. 31, 1990 versus Marymount University ... All 20 of Coleman's rebounds were defensive which is the most ever by a Navy women's basketball player in a single game, beating James' mark of 15 in that same contest against Marymount.
