ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– A pair of 6-1 victories over Delaware (2-3) and Fairmont State (0-1) on Friday gave the Navy men's tennis team (9-3) a good start to a busy four-match weekend.

The first match to begin on Friday was the dual against the Blue Hens being held at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, Del.  The doubles point between the teams would not be decided until the third and final match was completed in a tiebreaker.  Navy's No. 1 team of Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) and Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.) first posted a 6-3 win over Pascal Wagemaker and James Wilkinson.  Jack Dabek (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) and Jake Fishkin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) lost a 6-2 decision to Pierce Gilheany and Emiliano Gonzalez at the No. 2 flight to even the results.  The Mids secured the 1-0 advantage when their No. 3 tandem of Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) and Jack McBride (Sr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) defeated Alexandre Gluck and Guilherme Valdoleiros, 7-6 (7-4).

"Jack and Finn played well to win the tiebreaker," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

Garner made the score 2-0 when he posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Luis Molina at No. 2 singles.  Panyan followed by defeating Gilheany, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6 singles to give Navy a 3-0 lead.  Delaware kept the outcome undecided when Wagemaker defeated Fishkin, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 flight.  Dabek gave Navy the match-clinching fourth team point when he recorded a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Tobias Sonne at No. 5 singles.

Also winning matches were McBride at No. 4, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, and Thompson at No. 1, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

"Finn, Jack Dabek and Sasha played very well to earn straight-set wins against very strong competition," said Garner.  "Derrick and jack McBride plaed some of their best tennis in the third sets of their respective matches as they rallied from early set deficits."

Starting a short while later at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis, Navy lost a combined four games in sweeping the three doubles matches from the Falcons.  Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) and Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) didn't drop a game in defeating Bartosz Losiak and Ken Watanabe at the No. 1 flight.  Cy McLeod (Fr., Augusta, Ga.) and Christian Pumpelly (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) registered a 6-2 win over Elia Barozzi and Seena Saadevandi at No. 2 doubles.  The team of Andres Ballesteros (Jr., West Hartford, Conn.) and Sam Vagner (Sr., Staten Island, N.Y.) then won a 6-2 decision over Jacob Boone and Alex Stacy.

Segraves continued his strong play be defeating Bartosz, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 flight.  Vagner made the score 3-0 when he defeated David Velayos, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.  Pumpelly soon followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Watanabe at No. 3 singles to secure the match for the Mids.

Garner bounced back after losing the first set to defeat Barozzi, 0-6, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. The last match of the day saw Eric Liu (So., Canton, Mich.) outlast Stacy, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10).

"We had some strong early doubles play, while Gavin, Christian and Sam solodified the team win by playing extremely well in singles," said Garner.

Navy will play host to Fairleigh Dickinson (9 a.m.) and Villanova (12:30 p.m.) Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
