ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team has its busiest weekend of the young season ahead of itself as the Mids (3-1) have four matches scheduled over the course of Saturday and Sunday. Navy will play Saturday matches at Penn (2-0) and at home against Saint Joseph's (0-0), then will play host to Coppin State (0-0) and Georgetown (1-1) on Sunday.
The three home matches –– 4 p.m. vs. Saint Joseph's, 9 a.m. vs. Coppin State, noon vs. Georgetown –– will be contested at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Links to live results from this trio of matches can be found at NavySports.com.
Navy (3-1)
The Mids enter the weekend having after they split a pair of 4-3 decisions last weekend. Navy first defeated Youngstown State by that score, then lost to St. Francis Brooklyn.
The Mids won three singles matches in each of the two duals. The difference came down to doubles where Navy won the point against the Penguins and lost it to the Terriers.
Four Mids won a pair of matches during the two duals.
Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.) won at No. 1 singles against Youngstown State after he teamed with
Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) for a victory at No. 1 doubles. Navy's No. 2 doubles team of
Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) and
Jack McBride (Sr., Lutherville, Md.) combined for a win against the Penguins, then Garner won at No. 2 singles and McBride earned a No. 3 singles match victory. In the second match of the day against St. Francis,
Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) first won at No. 2 doubles alongside
Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.), then won his No. 1 singles match.
Penn (2-0)
The Quakers have opened their season with a 7-0 win at Buffalo and a 6-1 victory against Temple.
Penn posted a 4-2 record during its abbreviated 2021 spring season.
Saturday's match against Navy will be contested at the school's Hecht Tennis Center.
Penn holds a 59-34-1 advantage in the all-time series with Navy. The last win for the Mids came in 1999 when they posted a 7-0 victory. The Quakers have won 18-straight matches, with the most recent being a 7-0 victory in 2020.
Saint Joseph's (0-0)
The Hawks will be opening their season when they play the Mids on Saturday. Saint Joseph's put together a 10-8 record last season and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
Navy and Saint Joseph's met every year but one (2015) from 2002-20 before the series was paused last year due to the shortened seasons played by both teams. The Mids have won all 18 prior matches played in the series.
Coppin State (0-0)
Like Saint Joseph's, Coppin State will start its spring campaign when it faces the Mids this weekend. The Eagles recorded a 1-7 record during the 2021 season.
Navy has won each of its nine prior matches against Coppin State, with those matches taking place from the 2011-19 seasons.
Georgetown (1-1)
The Hoyas will play Friday at James Madison before traveling to Annapolis on Sunday. Georgetown has thus far this season lost 7-0 a match to Harvard and defeated St. Francis Brooklyn by the score of 4-0.
The Hoyas did not compete during the 2021 spring season.
Navy leads the all-time series with Georgetown, 75-11-1. The Mids defeated the Hoyas by scores of 4-3 in 2019 and 6-1 in 2020 before the series was interrupted in 2021. Georgetown had won five-straight matches in the series from 2012-18 before Navy's two victories.
