ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team earned a pair of victories Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis to bring its record on the weekend to 3-1. The Mids (6-2) first defeated Coppin State (0-1), 7-0, then posted a 6-1 win over Georgetown (1-3).
"Our home matches this weekend were all challenging," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "The team got a chance to play a number of quality opponents where the matches could have gone either way."
Due to Coppin State not having six players, Navy had to win just one of the two doubles matches to win the point. The Mids did just that as their No. 1 team of
Cy McLeod (Fr., Augusta, Ga.) and
Christian Pumpelly (Jr., Atlanta, Ga.) defeated Anas Haddou and Luke Markovic by the score of 6-1.
Navy earned their second point at No. 6 doubles as again, Coppin State didn't have enough players to complete the lineup which awarded a walkover victory to the Mids. The score became 3-0 when
Nicholas Nguyen (So., McLean, Va.) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dean Waterman at the No. 3 flight. The Mids clinched the match on a 6-2, 6-0 victory by
William Pak (So., Chantilly, Va.) over Vansh Kapoor at No. 5 singles.
Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles against Sergui Medesan,
Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) registered a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Markovic at the No. 2 flight and
Jan Kjellberg (Sr., White Plains,. N.Y.) defeated Haddou, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 4 singles.
"Christian and Cy played well today in doubles," said Garner. "In singles Sasha, Luke and Jan looked good in winning very competitive matches."
Navy won all three doubles matches against Georgetown to take a 1-0 lead. Nguyen and
Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) posted a 6-1 win over Akita Morgenstern and Charlie Suh at No. 3 doubles in the first match to finish. The point was secured when Panyan and
Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.) defeated Kiernan Foster and Adhvyte Sharma, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Completing the sweep was Navy's No. 2 team of
Jack Dabek (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) as the tandem posted a 6-3 win against Andrew Rozanov and Harry Yang.
In singles, Garner defeated Sharma, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 to make the score 2-0. It became 3-0 when
Jack McBride (Sr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) won a 6-3, 6-0 match against Morgenstern at No. 5 singles. Thompson secured Navy's match-clinching fourth point when he defeated Foster, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.
Additionally,
Conners O'Brien (Sr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) defeated Scott Bickel, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6 singles and
Jake Fishkin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) defeated Suh, 7-6 (7-0), 6-0, at the No. 5 flight.
"After taking the lead in doubles," said Garner, "I thought the team did well engaging in their singles matches."
The Mids posted a 3-1 record on the weekend as Sunday's results followed a 7-0 loss at Penn and a 6-1 home win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday.
"We had our chances in doubles at Penn," said Garner, "with Derrick and Jake, Sasha and Will, but Penn made the shots when they needed to make them to keep us off the scoreboard.
"It was a very experienced Saint Joseph's team we faced this weekend. Doubles could have gone either way, with Jack and Finn as well as Christian and Luke playing well to get the team the lead. In singles,
Jack Dabek looked sharp in his straight-set win while Finn, Gavin, Conners and Luke all won close matches which was great."
Navy will be home for two more matches Saturday as the Mids play host to Bryant at 10 a.m. and Richmond at 2 p.m.
