Beardmore’s Golden Goal Lifts #25 Navy Over #16 Johns Hopkins in Overtime

Navy trailed early, but relied on solid defense to keep the game close in order to earn the overtime victory.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 25 Navy women's lacrosse team (6-1) used a golden goal from sophomore Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.) to post a 13-12 overtime victory over No. 16 Johns Hopkins (4-2) on Thursday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Mids trailed early, but relied on solid defense to keep the game close in order to earn the overtime victory.

"We have a tremendous amount of respect for Johns Hopkins," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "They have an amazing program with great coaches. This is Janine [Tucker]'s last year of coaching so it is a little sentimental for me, but it was a great win for Navy women's lacrosse. We had a little bit of a slow start. We had to play one play at a time. We told the team at halftime that it wasn't going to be perfect, but just keep playing. They did. This proves you have to play to the very end. I am extremely proud of this team and their fight tonight."

The win is the second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent. The Midshipmen defeated No. 15 Drexel, 13-6, last Tuesday. Navy beat ranked opponents in back-to-back games for the first time since 2018 when Navy defeated Hopkins and Loyola in the NCAA Tournament.

Offensively, Navy tallied 13 goals with seven assists for 20 total points. The Mids had five players notch multiple goals, including Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.) who posted hat tricks. Beardmore, Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.), and Gil Eby (Towson, Md.) added two goals apiece, while Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with a goal.

Roelofs paced the squad with 10 draw controls, while Eby and Dietzel added four and two draws, respectively. Roelofs moved into second place all-time in Navy's career record book for draw controls, passing Jenna Collins (2015-18) who had 293 career draws. Roelofs now has 302 draws, making her the second player in school history with 300 or more draws, joining Navy record holder Loren Generi (2012-15) who finished her career with 493.

The Mids caused seven of Johns Hopkins' 14 turnovers on the night. Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.) paced the squad with two caused turnovers apiece. Christine Fiore (Darien, Conn.) led the team with five ground balls, while Bell added four GB.

Freshman Emma Richardell (Bethesda, Md.) earned her first collegiate victory at goal. The rookie entered the game in the second quarter, finishing the game with six saves and a pair of ground balls in a little over 34 minutes of action. She surrendered four goals in a little over a half of play. Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) started the game at goal. She registered one save in 25 minutes of action.

Johns Hopkins was led by Claire Mills, who finished with three goals in the game. Georgia Esmond led all scorers with four points, finishing with a goal and team-high three assists. The Blue Jays used a pair of goalies, finishing the game with two saves and 13 goals allowed.

In the first quarter, Hopkins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Mids cut the margin in half with back-to-back goals by Ryan and Eby. The Blue Jays answered with a goal, but Eby trimmed the margin back to 5-3. JHU closed out the quarter with a goal to push the advantage back to three.

Navy opened up the second quarter with goals by Roelofs and Beardmore, cutting the margin to one, 6-5. Johns Hopkins pushed its lead back to three with a pair of scores. The Mids answered with goals by Dietzel and Denton to trim the score to 8-7. The Blue Jays converted a free-position opportunity to take a 9-7 advantage into halftime.

Defense for both teams stood strong for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Denton started the third quarter with a goal at 4:25 to pull to within one, 9-8, for the third time. Once again, the visitors used a pair of goals to regain a three-goal advantage. Dietzel scored her second goal of the game to cut the JHU lead to 11-9 through three periods.

In the fourth quarter, Roelofs used back-to-back scores to tie the game at 11-11. Denton followed with a goal to give Navy its first lead of the game with 7:43 remaining in regulation. With 62 ticks on the clock, Johns Hopkins' Maeve Barker tied the score at 12-12, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, Beardmore was fouled and granted an eight-meter opportunity. The sophomore converted the free-position for the golden goal and the win.

Navy returns to action on Saturday, March 19, as the Mids take on Bucknell in the Patriot League opener. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
