Honors Abound for Navy’s Max Hewitt

Navy sophomore lacrosse player Max Hewitt (M / Denver, Colo.) has been the recipient of several honors this week after leading the Mids to an 11-10 victory over 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins Friday evening at Homewood Field in Baltimore. On Monday, Hewitt was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and was also selected as the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman. On Tuesday, he was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Team of the Week which recognizes the 10 best individual performances from the previous week by players around the country.

Hewitt is a first-time recipient of all three awards and the 17th different Navy player to earn the league's offensive player of the week honors since the Mids joined the Patriot League in 2004.

Hewitt scored a career-high 4 goals, including the game-tying and game-winning targets just 49 seconds apart, to lead Navy to its first win over the Blue Jays on their home field in 53 years (1969). The Mids had lost 22-consecutive games against Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field, while the win also snapped the Blue Jays' five-game winning streak in the series overall.

Hewitt finished with career highs in goals (4), assists (2) and points (6), while posting his third hat trick in the last four contests (3 vs. High Point / 3 vs. Lehigh). Remarkably, Hewitt and fellow starting midfielder Patrick Skalniak (Jr / Dallas, Texas), who turned in 6 points for a second-straight game, combined to play a role in 10 of the Mids' 11 goals. The only goal in which one of them did not record the goal or assist was the opening goal of the game, though Skalniak did feed Xavier Arline (So / A / Wading River, N.Y.) who made a fantastic move to get free for the goal.

A starter in seven of the eight contests this season, Hewitt is tied with Henry Tolker (Fr / A / Catonsville, Md.) for third on the Mids' scoring leader board with 19 points on 13 goals and 6 assists.

Navy returns to conference play this weekend when it plays host to Holy Cross (0-7, 0-3 Patriot League) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Saturday's contest is set for a 12-noon faceoff and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Additionally, WNAV 1430 AM / 99.9 FM and WFED 1500 AM will carry the game live with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller on the call.
