PRINCETON, N.J. – The Navy heavyweight rowing team began its 2022 season on Sunday with a five-race slate against Brown and Boston University. Racing on a 2,000-meter stretch of Lake Carnegie in Princeton, the Mids found themselves in competitive contests throughout the day. Navy's fifth varsity highlighted the regatta as it was victorious over Brown. Additionally, Navy's third varsity placed second, while the Mids' first and second varsity crews finished within two seconds of second place.

"I thought all of our boats raced hard today," remarked
Rob Friedrich, the Tom & Candy Knudson Director of Navy Rowing. "We are not happy with all of the results, but we learned a lot in our first race of the year and know we have a lot of speed to gain."

The action on Sunday began with the second varsity crews racing on Lake Carnegie. Brown was the class of the three-team field and clocked in first with a time of 5:59.45. Boston and Navy were close behind and battled to the line late with the Terriers earning a 6:03.68 to 6:05.44 decision over the Mids for second place.

Next up, the first varsity crews set off for 2,000 meters of competition. Brown earned its second win in as many contests as the Bears posted a 5:52.47 result. Boston and Navy once again were in a tight race for second place. The Terriers held on for a 1.90-second margin over the Mids, 5:57.70 to 5:59.60.

Navy collected its first runner-up outcome in the third varsity eight race. Brown collected its third victory of the day with a victorious time of 6:09.60. Navy was 3.96 seconds faster than Boston University and crossed the finish line with 6:14.90 result versus a 6:18.86 time for the Terriers.

The fourth varsity eight race was spaced out amongst the competitors as Boston won with a 6:27.96 time. Brown finished in second at 6:31.19, while Navy clocked in with a 6:41.01 time.

In the final race of the day, the Mids and Bears went head-to-head in a two-team contest. Navy led Brown throughout most of the event and registered a 6.08-second victory, 6:17.25 to 6:23.33 over Brown.

Navy will continue early-season action next Saturday, April 2 with its home opener versus Princeton on the Severn River.
